Kris Allen and Adam Lambert have new albums out

2012 May 22
by TopIdol

Upon checking my Instagram this morning, I couldn’t help but let out a legitimate chuckle at Kris Allen’s latest photo, a screen-cap from an iTunes downloads chart.

Kris Allen doing well in iTunes album download sales, selling more than Adam Lambert at some point.

I have no idea if Kris Allen saw the hilarity in leading his Season 9 runner-up Adam Lambert, or was just happy to be sitting in a comfortable spot in the Top 10 whenever this chart was grabbed. It is the first day people can buy Thank You Camellia, the followup to his self-titled debut. Hell, he’s a nice guy. He probably wanted to help his old buddy out by whipping his fans into a frenzy upon seeing such horror over something so arbitrary. (And don’t even tell me some endless thread on some LiveJournal site hasn’t already been making top-bottom jokes in between penning album-release-day slash.)

Adam Lambert’s Trespassing has been out a week and has already sold between 70,000-80,000 copies. Whether or not he has a #1 album will be known tomorrow when Billboard releases the final sales tallies.

Lambert’s Trespassing will likely sell more albums given its broader marketing and pop appeal, so please, don’t even attempt to school me with historic numbers, Google trends, and anything else you idiots think of. And by idiots, yes, I am referring to a majority of Glamberts who have been spending an awful lot of time rating and reviewing his album. 3250?! Are you kidding me? Sitting in the top spot is uber-douche John Mayer and he only has 546 ratings. Tenacious D has 646. But Adam Lambert has…3250?! Wait. It’s now at 3252. You people are still nuts, aren’t you? There MUST be an organized effort to give 5 Stars so THE MUSIC INDUSTRY WILL RECOGNIZE WHAT A MUSIC PHENOM ADAM LAMBERT REALLY IS. Few artists are even close to that number, although I must say I DID breathe a sigh of relief when witnessing over 43,000 ratings for Adele’s 21. And how long has that album been out again?

Forcing me to go to the Community section of Adam Official now, aren’t you? (NOTE TO SONY: Please hire someone who knows about experience design to start mapping out your artist websites. Also, page load is ridiculous. You need to better optimize on-site graphics for all browsers. And NO ONE uses white-on-black text for content-heavy sites anymore.) There’s an entire section devoted to this sort of thing, including a large effort to increase views of Lambert’s videos. Not saying all fans don’t do this sort of thing…well, most um, don’t. But American Idol fans are a whole other breed.

And in case you were wondering, I have yet to listen to Thank You Camellia but I DID listen to Trespassing last week. Reviews of both of these albums to follow but needless to say, I enjoyed it and have no problem admitting it. Definite improvement over For Your Entertainment, although Better Than I Know Myself would have not been my choice for a first single. Obviously trying to capture a tiny bit of something off the minor success of Whataya Want From Me, Better Thank I Know Myself just doesn’t grab you the way other tracks–such as Cuckoo–does. Instead of playing it safe by something so tailored for the Hot Adult Contemporary realm, why not try to FULLY position Lambert as a sort of Mika 2.0? Just go with the gay for chrissake.

I like to watch American idol due to it is famous for fun though hope Kris Allen and Adam Lambert new idol album would be pleasing and interesting. Thanks!

Some things never change.  Actually, I think it’s Haley who has the best album of the three.

Melinda, you are so misunderstood. You are just a girl who wants to have fun! You know in your heart of hearts that Kris Allen was never really all that. You just wanted to go with the winner. Now that the “winner” is proven to be a dud why bother defending or hyping him? It is a much happier and hipper place in Glamsville. Our guy is on his way to becoming the international star that the Glambert’s  all predicted. Get in reality and admit that Allen is nowhere and Adam is “It”. My girls on the farm are all hyped about Adam’s new #1 Billboard release “Trespassing”. http://twitpic.com/9kbgbc

Here we are three years later and this fan-war BS is still being exploited?  Feeling nostalgic, TI? Lonely? ;) Why not let Kris Allen enjoy his accomplishment? His fan came out in full force to get him that #8 spot on itunes. Why overshadow all that hard work by including Adam Lambert in the post? Especially in light of the fact that Adam Lambert’s #1 selling album, which he executive produced and co-wrote (all but 2 tracks), is enjoying such well-deserved acclaim. It’s almost as if you are inviting Glamberts to come here and gloat. Well, that’s the only reason I’m here. I love this album. I love the funk-infused, beat-driven, signature sound. I love that he served as Creative Director. I love that Lee Cherry was on board as Art Director/Photographer. I think the cover is attractive and contemporary. I love the blond highlights in his hair. I love the liner notes (especially the last few lines). Even the title is solid. I love that he’s succeeding in spite of naysayers and, dare I say it, haters. I love that he pairs leopard print Chico blouses with tight leather pants. I love that he misspells words. I love that he made history. I love that he’s honest about the highs and lows he’s experienced. I love that he gets up every time he falls down. I love that his success is pissing off detractors. I love that he’s figuring it out. Mostly I love being right…lol! :) It’s a good day to be a Glambert!

Now I’m going to watch Mad Men.

I like the fact that we are on the same page. You were slow, but you got it.

If you’re really the Great Kerry Kolsch, why aren’t you blasting your alleged cousin’s press release published in the SF Gate?

Will give him a few points for writing the greatest headline ever…

        Kerry,

You once likened me to the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party for using the word “homoerotic” to describe the staged sexual interaction between Adam and a band member— as if the word was offensive. I don’t think I’m the “slow” one here.  My initial dislike of “Glamberts” was a direct result of your cray behavior—exploiting Adam Lambert for monetary gain while undermining the career of Kris Allen who you accused of being part of some conspiracy because he liked chicken sandwiches.

Because I didn’t engage in fan forums or participate in fan cliques I had no idea what the majority of Glamberts were like. I assumed (mostly because everyone here said so) that you were the “prototype.” Happy to report, you represent a very small minority, not majority of Glamberts. So please, don’t use my snarky, “ha ha,” moment to drum up some hollow attempt at comradery. I have no interest in being your pal.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DOEI2FB4SYMKMGC3MJKUDJGDGQ Kerry Kolsch

I still disagree that Adam and Tommy were “homoerotic”. It was more playful than sexual. As far as my intent to exploit Adam for “monetary gain”, that would be the writers of the other book, not me. I still spend 4 to 6 hours every other Sunday working for free with Scott Katz on the U.S. Town Hall Roundtable podcast discussing Adam Lambert and LGBT issues. I did not undermine Kris Allen’s career, the people in Arkansas did that when they chose to bring in an unfair win. You call my behavior “cray” but the truth is I did not engage in suggesting a conspiracy. A “conspiracy theory” is a speculation that can never be proven with facts. The news media in Arkansas documented the fact that roughly 3,000 people attended parties that were hosted by AT&T executive Matt Jordan. Free phones were given out and the people attending voted thousands of times each. The voting and vote totals were broadcast by the local Fox station. Chisk-fil-A provided free food and prizes to the highest voters as did other businesses.  None of these events were of my imagination. Anyone can google the information who takes the time. I also documented an abundant amount of social media and marketing information, that anyone could verify, that proved that Adam Lambert was always about 5 times more popular than Kris Allen. This weeks album sales will prove it again. I happened to believe that Adam Lambert sang his heart every week to win. When Adam lost and people believed it was because of homophobia I wanted to find out if that was the truth. Why should LGBT youth believe that Adam was defeated by bigots? You and others like you turned my quest for the truth into a very evil attack on my character. I have no interest in being your “pal” but only to gloat that I live in a big house, have lots of money and friends and all your ever going to be is mean.

          • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

No one believed he lost because of homophobia. I can’t even believe I’m rehashing this bullshit but really, who thought that?

          • sourcandy

Kerry, are you on crack? Adam didn’t “WIN” because the inbred, couch-potatoes that watch that crap-fest-of-a- show like non-threatening, white boys who wear plaid and play the guitar.  That’s why variations of Kris Allen have won six years in a row. Or is that a conspiracy too? Who cares anyway? That show is more of a hindrance to a career in music than a help. Adam got way more mileage out of placing second then he would have ever gotten had he won. Your “quest for truth” was an exercise in futility.

As for me, “and others like me,” attacking your character, lol! We merely discussed factual information in OUR quest for the truth. FACT: you wrote a book about nonsense, accused Kris Allen of playing a part in some imagined conspiracy and made a profit from that book. FACT: the typography of the ridiculous book was horrendous. FACT: in spite of having lots of money you did not fork over the book’s profits to any of Adam Lambert’s charities. FACT: talking about Adam Lambert on the radio for a few hours every two weeks does not make you the Mother Teresa of Gays. It makes you shallow, insensitive and in desperate need of validation.

I don’t care what kind of house you live in, how much money you have, or how many imagined friends you “gloat” about. I may be mean, (how very Taylor Swift of you to notice) but I’m not the jealous type. :)

          • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

JEALOUSY is the go-to criticism whenever anyone doesn’t like someone in these groups. This season, I was told I was jealous of a teenager (Jessica Sanchez) because I constantly bashed her on my blog. It couldn’t be that I didn’t enjoy her performances, or found her personality to be off-putting, nope, I was JEALOUS. I WAS A JELLUS HATER.

More than anything, I don’t see how this is still even up for discussion when it happened over 3 years ago and each of these guys are now on their second album.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DOEI2FB4SYMKMGC3MJKUDJGDGQ Kerry Kolsch

It is you who is on drugs or is just plain delusional. It is now a well validated fact that Adam Lambert is and has always been far more popular than Kris Allen. Adam’s first album sold around 2 million worldwide to Kris’s 350,000 or so. Adam has also outsold Kris in singles. This time out Adam sold over 5 times more albums than Kris just in the US. Why don’t you give me one fact as to why the less popular guy won? Do not give me the WGWG bullshit because those voters favored Adam Lambert by more than 80%. The marketing data in my book proves that to be true. Perhaps you never read my book, but it is far more than “nonsense” and nothing about the organization in Arkansas to insure a win for Kris Allen was a figment of my imagination. You have no idea what I do for charities so do not presume to know my business. You did pick up on my Taylor Swift moment, but it is you, who in shallow desperation desperately clings to an irreconcilable position. The most talented and popular man did not win during Season 8. I was right and you are wrong. Get over it!

          • sourcandy

            Kerry,

I was over it 5 seconds after the finale.  You seem to be the one having a hard time “getting over it.” What is your damage? The show is lame and although two winners (women) have become somewhat successful, it has never produced a successful male winner. In fact, male winners seem cursed.

I never disputed Adam’s popularity, but it’s votes, not popularity, that produce winners in contests. EXAMPLE: Adam has roughly 1.5 million followers on twitter, GaGa more than 20
million, yet Adam has beat her in many online contests. Clearly, she is
more popular. Should her “little monsters” write a book about a Glambert
conspiracy? No, because it would be ridiculous.

You also have completely disregarded the fact that in addition to Kris Allen’s supporters voting feverishly for him, there where a lot of people who voted against Adam. Yes, with popularity comes resentment and jealousy.  Gokey fans, homophobes, and Vote for The Worst devotees, may not have been Kris fans, but they voted for him to undermine Adam’s win. That is not a big, corporate-funded conspiracy, it’s life.

Text block voting may, or may not have occurred, but either way the practice isn’t against Idol’s rules. I suspect that AT&T sponsors the show to drive up usage of their services. That’s why TV shows exists, you know. So advertisers can sell things. The objective of American Idol really isn’t about finding talent, it’s about drawing a large audience to boost ratings which translates into revenue. The show exists to make the advertisers, producers and network rich, not to make the contestants successful.

If  Glamberts had been more savvy they would have employed text block voting too.  They certainly engage in strategic, pack-voting now. How many times have you voted for Adam on VH1 or MTV? Hmmm? How many copies of his cds do you own?

Lastly, Adam’s talent will propel his career, not his association with that show. All of his achievements thus far have been earned. He may be a “loser” in your book, but he’s a winner in mine!

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DOEI2FB4SYMKMGC3MJKUDJGDGQ Kerry Kolsch

You still do not get it do you? You claim that Kris Allen won because he was the WGWG. If you look at the performance of those winners all outsold their runner up, including Phil, except for Kris Allen. The reason for that was the power texting fiends in Arkansas. Power texting is not against the rules. Scotty had big Watch Parties and a high school texting for him like crazy. Where I draw the line and cry foul is when AT&T gave away free phones and taught power texting at events of about 3,000 people. It is documented in the local media, newspapers and television that theses 3,000 people voted roughly 10,000 times each. That accounts for 30 million votes. When I researched these events it led to Matt Jordan, an AT&T executive who did promotional events at universities, including UCA. When the AT&T scandal broke Matt Jordan left AT&T and went to work for UCA, Kris’s collage. My take on it is that AT&T was not behind Matt Jordan. Jordan acted on his own. I proved that this cheating changed the outcome of Season 8 by researching all other factors with thousands of citations. What you are saying about Gokey’s votes is also wrong. The marketing data in Wisconsin shows that Adam was far more popular there and in every state except Arkansas. Many of Goekey’s fans believed that Kris was an ass during their duet and cost Gokey his place in the final. I agree with you that the corporate motive of AT&T and American Idol is for financial gain and not really to promote talent. I also agree that Adam’s future success will not be based on his connection to American Idol. I believe that in the coming months Adam will rock Europe and his popularity there will transfer and grow back here. Adam was never the “looser” in my book, he is the real winner who had his title stolen, (causing a minor setback for the LGBT community). Like all real winner in life Adam will always pick himself up, dust himself off, and get back in the race.

          • sourcandy

            Kerry, let’s wrap this up.

You wrote a book accusing everyone associated with Kris Allen of cheating. American Idol Producers, AT&T Chick-A-filet, Kris Allen’s friends/family, the entire state of Arkansas and UCA were all part of this diabolical conspiracy to prevent Adam Lambert from winning. You were never clear why, first you said it wasn’t homophobia, then you said it was. Now, after three years of allegations you have conceded that they only person responsible is some well-connected, over-zealous Kristard named Matt Jordan.  If Matt Jordan was a glambert and gave out 3,000 phones to help Adam win would you have written a book about how Kris Allen was cheated? Probably not. This isn’t about a quest for truth, this is about you being overly invested in a TV reality show that failed to deliver the results you wanted. You knew disgruntled Glamberts were an easy mark and you cashed in. This is why lawyers are called shysters.

Adam has said in numerous interviews that he used the show as a PR platform to get a record deal. He got that deal. He’s doing great. Enough said!

Don’t bother replying because I’m done.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DOEI2FB4SYMKMGC3MJKUDJGDGQ Kerry Kolsch

You obviously have a problem with reading comprehension or you never actually read my book. Matt Jordan had his own chapter. “Diabolical conspiracy”? I never accused Idol producers of being involved. In fact, I have always said that they would have preferred for Adam to have won. Adam did not lose because of nationwide homophobia but homophobia at Kris Allen’s vote parties that his brother helped organize and attended. Chick-fil-A did play a part. They staffed the events and gave out free food and prizes to the highest voters on their official vote teams.  We all know that they have a homophobic agenda. You make personal attacks on my motives because you can not dispute the facts. As you know, I do not give a rats ass about people like you calling me names. I happen to think that equality for the LGBT community is an important issue. You want to reduce my effort to the insignificance of a disgruntled fan because you can’t be honest that you and others like you were beyond evil when you attacked my character for exposing the truth. I never could understand how you claim to be an Adam Lambert fan. I responded because I always like having the last word and the last laugh. You did see Kris’s sales numbers, didn’t you?

one more thing…I love that HE WAS FEATURED ON NPR!!! (and *which should have been “that.”)

    • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

      It was more this:

Promised friend I would write review of Trespassing. Still need to listen to Thank You Camellia. Saw that photo this morning and felt motivated to dash off a quick post after noticing the placement/# of ratings (Which is odd considering the album has only been out a week).

I plan on reviewing both albums separately when I get the chance. It wasn’t an attempt to revive a fan-war, which is still going on (sadly) and is more tiring to deal with as a blogger than to fuel it.

Then again, I did forget how fun it was to be completely misunderstood by people spouting the rhetoric without even bothering to read my post. (See earlier comments)

  • Abc

Lambert’s album is getting some nice reviews, selling pretty well for an Idol #2, and yet Glamtards are furious that some people don’t recognize his genius.
Look idiots, there are people who think The friggin Beatles suck. Your not going to make everyone love this guy or his music. Once you realize that you might actually  allow yourselves to be happy.

  • Clarrice

I knew I’d find Adam’s resume in the comments. Never fails. LOL.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002166668687 Ali Goria

By the way, the music industry already recognizes his phenom. Trespassing already has a Metacritic score of 80. JSYK, it’s rare. And not a bad review. Don’t you have some better things to do than to bait fans for hits, girl?

    • mquincy

lol of course she doesn’t. and considering u and I r both here, it worked. Granted it’s this or schoolwork.

I agree about the release of BTIKM though.  I happen to love Never Close Our Eyes, but hope they will release Cuckoo or Trespassing as a single next (only because Pop That Lock doesn’t seem to be up for consideration).

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002166668687 Ali Goria

You’re so funny. Knowing Lambert was #1 all last week on iTunes, you wait until he starts taking his natural drop. Or are you dreaming that Kris would beat the Idol release that passed Adam or the boost that Adele got Sunday from the tv awards?

Here’s some REAL hilarity for you. The daily building sales report that closes tomorrow has Trespassing #1 on Billboard 200. Has been for DAYS. iTunes is just 38% of the numbers.

And since you can’t seem to avoid “the gay” snark, if he retains that slot, he’ll be the first artist who was openly gay when starting his career to have the #1 spot, in a 60 year history. And don’t tell me about Gaga with her faux bi narrative because HER first #1 was Born This Way.

Keep laughing. Especially when he does his Queen gigs and the one at the Royal Albert Hall they just added. http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/sales/salescht.cgi

    • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

Clearly you didn’t even bother reading my post. You’re so very, very typical of your kind.

    • mredfixer

Um, she posted a pic that Kris took.  Kinda hard to plan for that to happen and happen when he is above Adam.  I don’t follow Kris but he may have been happy with where he was on the chart or with 3 Idols on the chart or thought it was funny Tenacious D was above all of them (yes, saw the Jack Black vid about meeting Adam.  Yes, know where all of them are on the chart this week.)  Melinda included a link to the Billboard story and said she ENJOYED the new cd.  Considering all the vitriol out there about Adam, why are you creating problems that don’t exist here?  You and good old KK above just make it harder for me to be considered a sane fan.
