End of the Road

2010 September 1

The Season 9 Idol Tour wrapped up last night In Indianapolis, IN. Why do I feel a pang of sadness? (IDK, maybe it’s acid reflux…I did have some lasagna) I barely paid attention to the damn thing. Last year, I was GLAD that it was over. (but, that could be because I paid too much attention) Is it weird that I am experiencing regret at ignoring something that I really didn’t think I liked in the first place? At least we were rewarded with an epic 5 part Late Night Sandwich! I am going to post parts 2 & 4, cuz those are the two bestest!!!!11111!!. (the rest can be viewed at MJ’s!)

I love Part 4. WTF is wrong with Andrew Garcia? Oh Big Mike, don’t humor him. Sloppy Joes and Tater tots! Are they eating in a Middle School Cafeteria? (maybe it’s a good thing the tour’s over)

siobhan and adam lambert need to have a baby

No, Twitter person. Why did you have to say that? Now someone will make a creepy Siobadam baby on Make Me Babies.

Forget Siobadam, it’s Siogaga!:

OH god she broke something in her mouth 2 make it look like she had blood in mouth! [via Twitter]

Ruh roh. No action at the buses tonight, There may be blood.

This is a bunch of shit cuz the venue isn’t stoppin them frm comin out.they r sayin the idols don’t want 2!

they didn’t come out at all =( and the security was rude.

Fuck u! U piece of shit! 4 ur info I’m only tryin 2 GET a present 2 Casey frm London

Worst American Idol experience of my life!

Apparently, there were no hijinks ala the Season 8 Tour Finale. Tears flowed from Lee and Crystal towards the end, but there were no goldfishes in the drinking water, roses in the teeth, or people lying on pianos. Oh well, maybe I’m just sad that there will be no more Late Night Sandwich.

now that the concert is over, i cant wait for the albums to come out. very curious to see the numbers for both crystal and lee. are there release dates for the others? like casey? he actually might come out with something good IF he stays away from that generic “house” band sound.

  • auntieaimee

Hey, did you guys see this yet? I have to hand it to the girls, this was pretty damn funny.

    • auntieaimee

All right, I’m a dope. I keep messing up the embed code. Here ’tis:

      • sj

        That’s hilarious! Respect.

  • FreeDavidCook

I’m going to miss Late Night Sandwich! Got to know and like the guys much more from their late night eating hijinks than any televised moment on Idol.

  • Burgundy LaRue

I feel bad for S9′s crew. They didn’t do anything wrong, really. This year was doomed from go and nothing any contestant did could have helped.

Lee will get his record out. Of that I’m sure. RCA/19 will make sure of it. They’ve got to get something out of this season.

Crystal is another story, though. She apparently wants to delay it until spring to make sure it’s just right. I don’t see Jive giving her that much freedom. They’re going to want to capitialize on whatever’s left of S9 and get something out by the holidays, at least an EP. So unless Crystal gets to record material she already wrote-another big if-I don’t see how this is going to work in her favor.

I’ll write up a career prediction for s9 later. I’m too tired to care at the moment.

    • jukejoint

Do you kind of wonder if Crystal’s personality (wanting to do it her way, not really caring what the label or management wants, sticking to her guns) is why they suddenly anointed Lee as The Chosen One about halfway through the season? Her attitude is reminiscent of Taylor Hicks and we all know how well they liked that. It’s fine to let her do what she wants and be all stubborn and artistic as the runner-up, but it’s a whole different story for the winner.

Eh, what do I know? It was just one weird season from beginning to end. So many folkie girls. So few pop singers. Why, AI, why?

      • barado

Something seemed to change TPTB’s mind about Crystal as the favored one. Your theory works for me.

      • FreeDavidCook

I’m thinking that attitude is why TPTB suddenly switched to Lee. I’m betting that Adam displayed a little of that too during his run and it was another factor in his loss. 19 wants no one that’s going to give them too much attitude. Fine for a runner up, not so fine for a winner.

      • auntieaimee

They picked a bunch of folky girls in season 9 because they were looking for the next Taylor Swift, remember? Never mind that Crystal was more gospel, Lily was alternative, and Didi was, well, she could have gone the Colbie Callait, mellow pop songstress route if she didn’t seem like such a high strung basket case. This year they are looking for the next Beiber, so it will be fun to see how that pans out. I suspect that it will blow up in their faces again.

        • et

Oh, God, the thought of a chorus line of fetus-esque kidlets on Idol this year makes me want to rid myself of my Idol addiction for good.

          • jukejoint

Ditto. It will be like a whole line of David Archuletas and Jordin Sparks. Which… No, I can’t watch that.

There have been good youngsters — Allison, Alexan’Dria, one of the long string of blondes Cook’s year who cried on her way out the door — but they are hugely outweighed by the baddies.

    • sj

Crystal can take as long as she wants as far as I’m concerned cuz I aint buyin’ shit from her.

      • Blue Eyes

I will only buy it if it’s any good. Just because she has a good voice, doesn’t mean crap. It’s the songs that count.

I give her credit for wanting to take her time to get it right, but the Idol audience is fickle and you really have to strike when the iron is hot. There will be new Idols to tard over and she will be forgotten.

        • sj

I’ve only heard a couple of her songs, so I’m sure it’s not enough to go by, but they reminded me of Jewel.

        • deez

I’d like to know why they’d give any of these guys more time “to do it right”, when that luxury hasn’t been afforded to past winners or runners-up? Seems odd.

          • Lucky

Well, if you think about it they really bent the rules this year for this bunch. No shitty Kara-written coronation song and the winner didn’t actually have to be able sing in tune! (sorry Jane)

          • Pandora

I haven’t really been following, but I seem to remember the following from Crystal:
            1. She was going to use a lot of the material she’d written pre-Idol.
            2. The label didn’t like her material because it was too country-ish.
            3. Now she doesn’t care when it comes out as long as it comes out right

    • ross

I feel bad for S9′s crew. They didn’t do anything wrong, really. This year was doomed from go and nothing any contestant did could have helped.

I don’t agree. I don’t think the season was doomed from the get-go. Why was it doomed?

The contestants were the reason the season sucked. I don’t agree they didn’t do anything wrong. Most of them sang badly. When they didn’t sing badly, they performed worse.

The show is supposed to be entertaining. The contestants should provide the entertainment. The only excuse I can make for contestants on a singing show who sing badly is: they didn’t choose themselves, or vote for themselves. So maybe the wrong people were chosen. That’s not their fault. It’s not their fault they suck. That’s the only thing I can think of in their defense.

      • sj

I agree with you completely, Ross. I’ve always said the judges and producers picked terrible contestants. Tim Urban over Angela Martin anyone? (Tim Urban over anyone?) (His put down of the judges was sweet, I’ll give him that.) But they all sucked on the show. Maybe there were three or four decent performances, however the standard was so low, we’d grasp at anything, now wouldn’t we. The judges’ “performances” sucked too. The season sucked. Sucked sucked sucked. Sucked.

      • Burgundy LaRue

The contestants have no control over the producers and judges, who behaved even dumber this season than in previous years.

Simon was already checked out. Randy’s limited vocabulary was in high-gear again. Ellen was polite, but contributed nothing. Don’t get me started on Kara. Seacrest seemed high and angry the whole time. The bottom line is that no one with any authority bothered bothered to try.

The producers/judges shouldn’t have tried to force the Taylor Swift issue. Truth of the matter is that the real Taylor Swift wouldn’t do so well on the show. She’d make it to the mid-way point due to her personality and looks. But vocally? She’d be a taller version of Carmen Rasmussen, and shredded for not being ‘young and current’.

Besides, they were on the wrong cycle for Swift. She was coming down from her last album/tour. Meaning she wasn’t super popular during S9. Meaning they couldn’t use her as an example, because she’s not in the spotlight where she can be of help to their cause. Taylor is getting ready to promote her new album now. 2011 is the year they should have gone for the Taylor type if they were so gun-ho about it. But they’ve moved on to Justin Bieber. And again, they’re a year behind the curve.

They gave the contestants even less to work with this year. If what Aaron Kelly said was true, there were weeks where 7-8 finalists had only a list of 12-15 songs to choose from, with nearly all of those have been performed on the show in the past. That’s ridiculous. The producers were too cheap or lazy to get licenses for other material. Bet when they try for their version of Justin Bieber, they come up with something new.

I suspect Fuller and Co. knew that their days with Sony were near an end from the start of the season. So why bother putting in effort? Just let the season sink or swim on its own and reboot everything for S10.

Were the contestants less than desirable? More often than not, yeah. Even Crystal, Casey, and Mike–the three that sang well consistently–became boring about midway. But there have always been bad contestants who couldn’t sing and/or perform. There are always 2-3 finalists that have no business on the stage. Tim and Andrew were the glaring bad spots this year. But everyone else could carry a tune for the most part, even if I didn’t always enjoy them.

S9 wasn’t the most talented bunch, but they had enough to put together an OK season–IF the producers hadn’t tried to manipulate things so early, only to abandon ship when their idea crashed and burned. All the alt/folk girls outside of Crystal eliminated each other. The die was set from that point.

  • blacklisted

    Who are these people again?

  • CayKat

A bunch of boring singers end a really boring tour. Not even Late Night Sandwich can save these people. YAWN

  • caspar

It makes me so, so glad that my favorite got in there when he did, gathered a nice big fan base and a lot of goodwill, made himself a few millions, managed to bring a whole bunch of other worthy musicians along for the ride, and will be able to make music and find an audience of some kind for pretty much as long as he wants it.

Casey is the only one of this bunch who stands a chance, IMO, and I see him as a niche artist, which he will probably be fine with.

  • Blue Eyes

This was probably the least successful Idols Live tour on record.

With the exception of Crystal and Goat Boy, who I think have some talent, everyone else sucked.

    • et

I have yet to go to an Idols tour show but… I didn’t even *want* to go this year. I figure I’ll catch Crystal and our dear Beloved Goat Boy when they are out on their own. They are the only ones I wanted to see and I just don’t have the time or $$ to sit through a whole show for two people who only sing a few songs. Some Crystal and Goat Boy, come on up to DC and I’ll come see you. Maybe.

      • et

*Some* Crystal? How about *So* Crystal?

Yeesh, all this 90+ degree weather has melted my brain.

    • muzikizmi

I agree that Crystal and the Beloved Goat boy were the most talented of the top 12. However, I think Katelyn Epperly was probably the most talented of the season. I predict that in 5 years, she will be selling records, while people are saying ‘whatever happened to that DeWheezy guy’?

I think Casey will do well. He is a much better guitarist than singer, but I think he sings better than a lot of male country stars.

      • auntieaimee

I liked what I heard from Katelyn in her pre-Idol stuff, but once she was on the show she reminded me of the chick from The Captain and Tenille (course, she was singing old songs). I kept waiting for her to bust into Muskrat Love.

        • sj

I hope you’re right auntieaimee – I like Katelyn. Couldn’t stand Lilly Scott and Crystal has a creepy attitude. Can’t stand Lee DeWyze. I like Goat Boy a lot. Was listening to Stevie Ray Vaughn recently and he had that bibrato going on too.

          • sj

            ^vibrato. Or goat bleat.

          • jukejoint

Bibrato is what happens when babies warble.

          • Pandora

Bibrato is what happens when Justin Bieber gets nervous.

          • jukejoint

I think that’s Biebrato, Pandora. Bibrato is for babies or people eating at lobster restaurants.

          • Pandora

People who wear bibs when eating lobster are amateurs!

    • comer

Yup, I also think Crystal and Goat Boy were the only two who didn’t suck, lol.

  • margie

It is already over? Like with the show, didn’t keep up.

  • Miz

I think these kids got a bad rap. I wish them well and I do think there is some talent in there. The ones I think will be OK are Crystal, Casey, Aaron, and Tim. I think Big Mike is ballsy and funny enough that he may end up with his own show somewhere – probably cable TV.

    I’ll miss Late Night Sandwich.

    • et

Big Mike looked just right in his Late Night Sandwich t-shirt, lol. He needs a show for sure.

      • deez

Is it bad that I don’t even remember Mike’s last name? He’s just “Big Mike”.

  • Pandora

I’m kind of wondering if Lee and Crystal will even have albums released from their record labels. Haven’t both of them said things about waiting, not rushing to get them out before Xmas, etc.? Even though both were supposedly going to use material they’d written pre-Idol?

They seem to think that the world will wait for them ad infinitum, not realizing that they didn’t even get 15 minutes of fame out of this season of Idol; it was more like 6.5, of which 6 minutes is already gone. If those CDs aren’t out before the next season starts, IMO it’s unlikely they ever will be.

    • DeeDee

I think they have to release something or the show loses any credibility it has left. Of course they could release a great big pile of crap.

  • comer

Not sad to see most of these peeps fade back to obscurity. They were a pretty mediocre bunch as a whole. Lee’s being the headliner and the poor ticket sales really say it all. Honestly, I don’t see any of the AI9 contestants making a splash in the music biz.

  • Mysterioso

    And……………CUT! It’s over.

It will be interesting how Idol and SONY/BMG treats all of them now, since it’s just there is no relationship there anymore.

Almost makes me feel sorry for them. Who am I kidding? Not really.
