The Emmy Nominations only kind of suck this year

2010 July 8

Thanks to All_Sabrina for this amazing chop!

The 2010 Emmy Nominations were announced this morning. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences continued to lick the taint of Glee, nominating it for about 100 things…including that useless Restylyne idiot Lea Michele. Well, I guess she is less wooden than co-nom January Jones. Please, tell me? Do you just HAVE to nominate her because you nominate every other lead actor in Mad Men? The difference is, they’re GOOD. (Jon Hamm is obviously up for Best Actor in a field of truly outstanding nominees, and Elisabeth Moss, Christina Hendricks and John Slattery both got Supporting nods, as well as Robert Morse for Guest Actor.)

The best part about this year’s nominations wasn’t the Mad Men love, believe it or not. It wasn’t even the fact Jon Hamm got TWO nominations, the second in the Best Guest Actor (Comedy) for his hilarious turn as Dr. Drew in 30 Rock. It was the fact both Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler received nominations for Friday Night Lights. I am stunned. I am doing a happy dance. The Taylors might be the most awesome married couple in the history of hour-long TV dramas.

Naturally, the Emmy nominations had to mostly suck. In addition to Glee getting all those nods, Kristen Wiig was once again nominated in the Supporting category for being the death of comedy on SNL. And The Office was nominated for Best Comedy. Uh…what? Has anyone watched Parks and Recreation? Oh well. At least we will get to see Betty White take home another statue and take solace in the fact no one likes that rat bastard Jay Leno.

Oh frak. I almost forgot. American Idol got SIX nominations. Huh? The voters were obviously watching Nouvelle Star and got confused. And The Goddess Cat Deeley was once again inexplicably denied in the somewhat paradoxical category of Best Reality TV Host. So the Emmys still really, really suck.

I just saw this piece on how the Mad Men cast (and Matthew Weiner) reacted to all their Emmy nods.

    http://blogs.amctv.com/mad-men/2010/07/press-roundup-0709.php

Interesting that Christina Hendricks is really a blonde, that January Jones looks dopey as as Lulu-style redhead with thick eyebrows, that you can JibJab yourself into Mad Men situations, AND that there is a Mad Men School of Seduction viral video out there I didn’t know about.

    Amusing!

Just when I think it’s not possible to love Jon Hamm any more than I already do:

It might be late in the fourth quarter, but “Friday Night Lights” finally got some Emmy love.

The acclaimed drama was nominated for four Emmys on Thursday, including lead actor and actress in a drama for Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, who play the patriarch and matriarch of Dillon, Texas, the small town, football-mad world of “Friday Night Lights.”

The show was also nominated for best writing in a drama series (by Rolin Jones) and best casting. Though many critics have called it the best show on TV for years, it had previously only been nominated for casting (winning in 2007) and directing.

Jon Hamm, also nominated for lead actor for his work in “Mad Men,” spoke for many when he said Thursday of the show, “I can’t believe it’s taken this long.”

“For a long time, it almost felt like, is there a reason that they’re not nominating this show? Is it not on the ballot? Are they using secret ink? Come on, this show is good,” he said.

“It was just one of those things. It wasn’t pushed, it wasn’t represented well by its studio or network or whatever. It was kind of bounced around on the schedule, but people kept seeking it out.”

Whoa, I just noticed that you (and Gawker) omitted one of the Best Supporting Actor – Comedy nominees:

Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men

    Yes….Again….Vomit.

Watch the MF boys split the vote and Cryer pick up the dividends. BLAH.

  • caspar

Yeah, I’m a Dextard because Cook recommended it (sad, I know).

Since the Blessed Non-Virgin Betty White is headlining here, thought you’d be interested in this: http://www.morrisanimalfoundation.org/blog/category/general/betty-white-calendar.html

I don’t like Glee but I’m oddly drawn to watch it at times. I don’t think anyone on the show deserves an Emmy nod aside from Jane Lynch. To me she is the lead actress on the show not Lea Michele. Unfortunately the Emmy people consider her a supporting actress. I just can’t buy Lea as a high school girl. She looks way too old for the part in my opinion.

Add me to the Dextard list. I love Michael C Hall and Jennifer Carpenter. I always hated Rita, sorry don’t know her real name. Her character annoys me which I guess means she did a good job with the role. Anyone else have the urge to smack her and tell her to stop whining at times?

On a side note, it seems one of David Cook’s softball teammates got an Emmy nod. Cook tweeted this last night.
“Congrats to my softball teammate and all-around good dude, @isaiahmustafa, on his Emmy nom! Well-deserved!”

He’s the guy from the Old Spice commercials. I’m never sure if I love those ads or if I hate them and want to throw things at the tv when they come on. In the end I always end up laughing at the over the top cheesiness.

    • http://theepezdispenser.blogspot.com/ ePastorJames

Those ads are amusing. Well deserved, lol.

I still haven’t caught up with the second half of Glee. My favorite was always Jayma Mays, followed by Mark Salling (yummy), and then Dianna Agron. I feel that these three are the most underappreciated on this series, and deliver subtle, solid work throughout. Although even though he’s not a regular, I guess Mike O’Malley’s dad is probably my #1 fave overall.

Rita = Julie Benz :P . She was…a lesbo stripper on Desperate Housewives I think? Not that I watch that defecation any longer.

  • marissa

Yay Mad Men and Dexter! Has Christina Hendricks been nominated before? So glad that she and Elizabeth Moss both got nominated, they are amazing. The scene between them right before the foot goes BOOM was one of my favorite moments of the season. And idk, I actually think January Jones is pretty awesome.

And I’m really happy that Jane Lynch and Lea Michele and Chris Colfer were nominated. I saw Lea Michele twice in Spring Awakening and she’s amazing, and Chris Colfer is just incredibly naturally talented. He’s got that Kate Winslet thing of making you want to cry whenever he cries.

And I totally did not know that there was a filmed version of the Hamlet production with David Tennant and Patrick Stewart? brb, finding that DVD, omg.

    • magnacarta

Oh yeah, the foot incident. That was pretty horrifying.

I like January Jones too. She did a great job with the character she had.

      • Verbally Dyslexic

Seems like you and I are among the few people who like January Jones’s Betty Draper. I think she plays a repressed housewife pretty well.

        • marissa

I think a lot of people like her? When I’ve read reviews of the show, she generally gets praised a lot. The whole cast does, really. And yeah, I agree, she plays that part really well–kind of mask-like with a lot of emotions underneath,

        • http://theepezdispenser.blogspot.com/ ePastorJames

I actually think she does a good job and, in particular, she was probably the best this season of all three.

I’m just OUTRAGED that Katey Sagal was snubbed for a role and performance which not only toppled that of her competitors, but should’ve won in her category. (Because despite giving Carpenter my win, Carpenter was supporting for Emmys. Also, Sagal won for me last year.) What her character went through this season was pure Emmy-bait, but never a turn-off.

So Jones and fraking Mariska Hargitay (I used to enjoy her and SVU, but she’s stale and the show’s a turd now) being nominated over her is disgusting.

Jones has great moments–particuarly the final 3-4 episodes of season 3–but her choices in line delivery come off as affected and phony on occasion, and it’s that stunted acting (probably intended to be Stepford-ish, but only 3/4-successful) that makes her lesser than others at the moment. Although, yeah, I’d nominate her over Hargitay.

At least Connie Britton was *finally* recognized. Otherwise, there would be even more outrage.

          • marissa

I don’t know who Katey Sagal is. :( What show is she on? If she’s that awesome, I will have to watch.

          • http://theepezdispenser.blogspot.com/ ePastorJames

Katey Sagal played Peggy Bundy on Married…With Children.

Now, she plays Gemma Teller Morrow on Sons of Anarchy.

And I dunno if you’re a Futurama fan or not, but Sagal *also* voices the awesome, kick-ass cyclops mutant Leela Turanga….Ahhh, I’m so glad that show is back.

Oh, also, she portrayed the mom on 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, but I’ve never seen it.

Hopefully, though, you’ve seen at least one of those shows and now know who I’m talking about, haha.

        • Trish

I love her too! I’ve known many a real Betty Draper (and I’ve lived on the Philly Main Line).

          • Trish

(But, yes, Connie Britton is a goddess. Thankfully she *finally* got her due.)

      • marissa

The foot moment was such an amazing mix of totally horrifying and absolutely hysterical. So brilliant, you just never expect accidental amputation on Mad Men, lol.

        • magnacarta

Somebody here told me to watch out for the John Deer . When I saw it in the office building, I was thinking ‘no, they wouldn’t’ in my head because, well, why else would they say to watch out for it?

    • Verbally Dyslexic

I’m just starting to get into Dexter. Is it weird that I find Michael C. Hall as a serial killer kind of… adorable? I could change my mind though, I’m only 1/3 through Season 2, so not even halfway through yet.

      • marissa

lol, it’s not weird to me, I think he’s adorable (and ridiculously hot) too. :)

The second season is fantastic. The 4th is maybe the best? It’s definitely the most intense. I legit had nightmares from that thing.

        • deez

NOT WEIRD AT ALL!!!! I’m a Dextard too! That show is brilliant, I can’t wait for next season. I guess we can’t really discuss the finale from last season since VD hasn’t seen it yet…it’s a punch in the gut, isn’t it? I spent about a week on message boards deciphering all the details.

I can remember when I first heard about it, i was like, “Really?? Who the hell wants to watch a show about a serial killer?” Well, it turns out that was me. Michael C Hall and Jennifer Carpenter are great! (as is the supporting cast)

          • Verbally Dyslexic

I have heard that the S4 finale was crazy good. I’m trying to finish it all off by next week. I should be done with S2 by tomorrow and maybe I can wrap up Season 3 by Tuesday if I do 4 eps a day. Who needs sleep anyway.

          • Lucky

Dextard here too, I named my kitten Dexter. I got into the show after reading the books, which were ok, the show is a thousand X’s better. I watched all four seasons in about six weeks. I was sick with the flu and in bed watching the S4 finale and I actually screamed out loud. I love, love, love Michael C. Hall, he is the total package, fantastic actor, good-looking and sexy.

          • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

I have a friend who named his son Dexter. I swear.

          • http://theepezdispenser.blogspot.com/ ePastorJames

Another Dextard! I’ve seen each season twice and I betcha I could rewatch all four seasons and still love it like the first time.

Also, I dunno if I consider Hall sexy. He’s more ugly-hot to me…strangely appealing though.

Btw, I loved Benz earlier on, and she always played her part well. It was her character who became a nuisance.

          • deez

            ugly-hot

That’s a perfect description, lol, he’s not really a “good-looking” guy, but yeah, count me in..:).

          • marissa

Oh man, that season finale was one of the most horrifying things I’ve ever seen. IDK, somehow I wasn’t expecting that. It was one of those things where it ended and I was just sitting there in shock and then started sobbing. I know it’s fiction but you know stuff similar to that happens in real life, and seeing it happen to characters you’re emotionally invested in…just, yeah.

I love Jennifer Carpenter too! She’s so talented and really gorgeous. She seems kind of under-appreciated but hey, if Christina Hendricks is just now getting her first nomination, hopefully Jennifer Carpenter’s time will come. :)

I think Michael Hall is really good-looking, just in a somewhat unconventional way?

lol, TI, did your friend name his kid after Dexter or was that just a coincidence? If he named his kid after Dexter, that’s both awesome and potentially a little awkward to explain.

          • jukejoint

I have a friend who looks like Michael C. Hall’s twin. He’s like my brother. So it’s hard to get past that and find MCH attractive.

      • magnacarta

LOL, no you won’t change your mind. I never thought I’d cheer for the serial killer, but there you go. It’s amazing what good writing and good acting can make you like, isn’t it?

    • http://theepezdispenser.blogspot.com/ ePastorJames

Nope, this was Christina Hendricks’s first time, and it’s about damn time at that!

      • marissa

Yay! :) She’s amazing, and she totally deserves the recognition.

  • Kathy

If Alec Baldwin beats Jim Parson I am going to hurt someone. Bazinga.

    • deez

I just watched this week’s BBT. It had one of my favorite lines ever. When Sheldon is pestering Leonard about his relationship with Stephanie, he holds up the laptop to look at her Facebook book page, and asks, “What do you see here, Leonard?” Leonard’s reply: “The blunt instrument that will be the focus of my murder trial?”

      • deez

unnecessary “book” there^ (sorry. I feel compelled to correct myself)

    • magnacarta

Sheldon Cooper reminds me of half my friends. They are not as extreme, but they are hardcore nerds.

  • CK Dexter Haven

Number me among those who just can’t get into Glee. I also tried Parks & Rec a couple of times , and it never struck a chord. I haven’t seen a lot of the shows nominated, but I’m familiar the actors. Never seen “Breaking Bad”, but Bryan Cranston is terrific in anything.

“Mad Men” is awesome, love “Modern Family”, The Office has jumped the shark, although it’s still better than a lot (well, most sitcoms) of comedies out there. With Steve Carrell leaving, I think this is probably all for The Office. (unless they want to import David Brent, then I would light candles and hold a service :) ) 30 Rock is consistently funny. Alec Baldwin is perfect.

One thing…what is the criteria for nomination (anybody know?) in “Made for TV” movie?? I notice “The Pacific” was nominated in that category, as well as for miniseries (although it’s technically a miniseries). It was good, IMO, but it wasn’t in the same league as Band of Brothers.

    • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

The criteria for a Made for TV movie is one or most of the following:

      Must be shown on HBO
Must have irritating yet at one point critically-acclaimed actor (i.e., AL PACINO, Clare Danes, and as evidenced by last year, fraking Drew Barrymore & Jessica Lange)
      Must be shown on HBO
Involving war or space, but always including Tom Hanks in some capacity

      • BettyBlue

Tell us how you really feel.

    • auntieaimee

Speaking of David Brent, I don’t know if anyone has seen “Louie” on FX (Tuesdays, 11pm), but Ricky Gervais had a very funny cameo in it this week, and Louis CK is the funniest stand up comedian working today, so it’s worth checking out.

    • Llamakhan

I liked Glee at first, but now I think most of the characters are obnoxious. Especially the main girl, she does her broadway acting on tv and it comes across so over the top and whiney. Also, how is Glee a comedy? It’s a musical drama with some jokes thrown in!

    • OvenMitt

Yeh, I blew my wad during the first half of the first season of Glee. My gay BF burned me both volumes of that mind-numblingly annoying soundtrack, and I just couldn’t deal with it. It sent me over the edge. I gave those CDs to my teenage sisters. And I SHOULD like Glee, since I’m a former high school choir survivor. I guess I can’t relate to those characters’ experiences because in my school, the choir won state championships and had cool kids in its ranks. We were basically the shit. Odd, I know.

      • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

I feel like there’s a new CD soundtrack every week.

    • wino

Band of Brothers was a master piece. I loved every single episode and was impressed by not only the action, but the acting. The Pacific just didnt flow as well. I never felt that it found its grove, some of the storylines felt disconnected. Hmm, not sure how to explain it. It had all the right ingredients, but it didnt draw me in.

      • deez

Agreed. I CARED about the characters in Band of Brothers. In The Pacific, I would forget who was who, where they were, what was going on…too many separate storylines, I guess?? The film never made you care what happened to them. After watching BoB, I went online and signed the petition to award Dick Winters the Medal of Honor (he’s still around @92). That’s effective filmmaking.

(plus I kind of love Damian Lewis)

  • wino

I watch Glee and I enjoy it (for the most part), but a nomination for Matthew Morrison as LEAD ACTOR is truly a slap in the face of real acting. What a joke. Also, if it wins best comedy over the master piece that is Modern Family, I might cut a bytch. Glee has been extremely uneven all season. And while it is charming and sweet at times, it is not as “funny” as Modern Family.

Yes, happy dance for Connie and Kyle. And even for Matthew Fox, who killed it in the last season of Lost. But despite my love for Kyle and Fox, I think best actor should go to Michael C. Hall. Man, he was brilliant. And since Best Drama will go to Lost or Mad Men (or Breaking Bad), I think the voters will reward the show by giving Hall the win.

If ever there was proof that Cat was robbed by the emmy voters, please watch last night’s show, where she tears Mia and Nigel a new one :) Is there a more charming, spot on host in reality tv land? I think not.

    • Darcy

So so happy for Kyle and Connie. About time too.

      • BettyBlue

Still sad that season 5 is going to be FNL’s last.

    • jukejoint

I like Matthew Morrison about 100 X more than I like Kristin Chenoweth, Lea Michele and Idina Menzel put together. Just sayin’. I saw him in Light in the Piazza and he was really, really good. Real acting. Real singing. And an Italian accent. Meanwhile, I hate Wicked with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns, and Spring Awakening right behind it. But Kristin Chenoweth most of all.

      • http://theepezdispenser.blogspot.com/ ePastorJames

Well, at least he has one fan.

        • wino

Dont worry jukejoint, Im sure there is support group for the 5 Matthew Morrison fans out there:) Yeah, not a big fan of Kristin or Indina. Lea has grown on me. Initially she was the reason I hated the show, but over time, I grew to accept her existence. In all honesty, I feel the only folks who deserve an emmy nod from that show are Chris and Jane. Lea as best actress? Matthew over Ed O’Neill? Hmmm, a bit suspect if you ask me.

And I’m too lazy to do Guest Acting, but I can tell you the winners:

Guest Actor – Comedy: Mike O’Malley, Glee
    Guest Actress – Drama:
    Courtney Ford, Dexter

I’m guessing I’d probably give Guest Actress to Judith Ivey on Nurse Jackie and John Lithgow on Dexter, but I’m not positive.

    Comments?

    • Pandora

Oustanding Supporting Actor – Drama needs to include Zach Gilford, Friday Night Lights.

      • Darcy

Oh, hell yeah. “The Son” was heartbreaking. Glad the writer got a nom for that episode too.

      • BettyBlue

Zach Gilford is no longer a series regular in season 4, so he’s probably not eligible in that category.

        • Darcy

So Outstanding Guest Actor, then? All I know is he rocked that episode.

      • http://theepezdispenser.blogspot.com/ ePastorJames

Some have actually stated that he was a Guest Actor–at least that’s where he was submitted at the Emmys. You have to be in more than a majority of the season’s overall episodes to be supporting and/or lead.

I would have to go with Nick Offerman.

Honestly, I tried watching Community and I absolutely loathed it. And I know some people may find this criminal, but I have not seen Modern Family. And I refuse to watch True Blood. I have watched a few minutes of Treme and found it obnoxious and indulgent.

Yeah, yeah, yeah…you won’t hate me now, right?

      • wino

what is wrong with you woman? get on the Modern Family bandwagon!

yeah, I gave Treme a shot, but I found the people annoying and the storylines a bit trite. a rate miss from HBO in my opinion.

      • jukejoint

Did I ever tell you that I knew Nick Offerman when he was in college? I think he played one total role in college — a policeman who blew a whistle in a farce called A Little Hotel on the Side.

He’s so good in Parks & Rec. He’s a really nice guy in real life, too. Or he was in 1990.

      • http://theepezdispenser.blogspot.com/ ePastorJames

Never! Now that would be blasphemy.

Which episodes of Community have you seen though–the pilot? I LOLed @ that more than any other show in history. I would recommend you check out some of the later episodes, particularly “Modern Warfare”. I have a feeling you’d love Alison Brie’s Annie character. (God, this series was SO ROBBED at the Emmys.)

Modern Family is easy to love. It doesn’t even matter if you watch it out of order, just check it out sometime.

I completely understand the Tremé comments actually. That’s why I didn’t give it a series nom. But the later episodes have shown a lot of growth.

    • wino

Sam Trammell, True Blood ????? maybe this was a typo? :)

I would move Michelle Forbes into the Guest Actress category and give her the win.

As much as I adore Hamm, this season was not his strongest. Give Dex his due.

      • http://theepezdispenser.blogspot.com/ ePastorJames

Typo? Hell no! I love Sam–okay, I want to do Sam. He’s mah kind of man, mhm. But he was terrific, or so I felt.

I wouldn’t, because she was in every single episode. And when you’re in every single episode, you count as a series regular for that season. (See: Glenn Close, The Shield.)

I already gave Michael C. Hall a win for season 2, which I felt was his strongest work. But I’m glad he might win this year, hopefully, because he’s due. I felt Hamm was great, particularly in the last four episodes as his life is crumbling apart. He exposed a new vulnerability–Kosher Hamm!–and this is the first time I felt he was win-worthy.

    • Lucky

I couldn’t agree with you more about Jennifer Carpenter. Not only should she have been nominated she should win. She was great the whole season of Dexter but the last few episodes she fucking killed it.

      • http://theepezdispenser.blogspot.com/ ePastorJames

So glad that I’m not alone there. Too many people rag on her for previous seasons, when she was a bit too shrieky. This season, I felt she matured both as an actress and with Debra as a character.

        —-SPOILER ALERT—-

After she got shot and Lundy was killed, Debra just exploded with all kinds of emotions and Carpenter magnificently portrayed each one.

  • MissMyEm

And The Goddess Cat Deeley was once again inexplicably denied in the somewhat paradoxical category of Best Reality TV Host.

I can’t believe they did this either. I have the utmost respect for this woman for standing up to the 3 idiot judges on this show, yesterday. The woman has chutzpah and I admire that. And I hope Mia Michaels did not get any nominations. Gad, I can’t stand that woman.

I’m surprised that Ed O’Neill was snubbed for Modern Family. I love that show. It’s one of the best ensemble sit com casts to come along in a while.

I love The Closer…and I don’t watch the other shows…but all the Guest Actors are fabulous actors so for me, I’m good with any of them winning.

  • http://theepezdispenser.blogspot.com/ ePastorJames

Let’s all bow down at the altar of Betty White, goddess of lulz.

Although I have gone from midly enjoying to loathing the very essence of Glee, I must say that I LOVE that the best cast member was nominated: Mike O’Malley. I was deeply worried that he would get lost among the ruins or something, but he’s really hitting his stride lately, and I’m glad. From Global GUTS to Yes, Dear, he evolved into a terrific actor. Episode 4–the coming out episode–that was just brilliant, so yay for that.

That being said, Matthew Morrison over Joel McHale is an absolute JOKE. McHale on Community is hilarious; Morrison is a hammy, repulsive wank. But hey, at least Charlie Sheen AND Jeremy Piven got snubbed. Guess voters finally had all the assclowning they could take.

And don’t even get me started on Jones/Cryer robbing Katey Sagal/Ed O’Neill. Can anyone say “anti-Married…With Children bias”?!

But this is all made better a la Chandler and Britton. At long last. Hooray!

  • OvenMitt

Okay, who did Ken Warwick blow to get those nominations?

My husband forced me into watching Breaking Bad, and though he’s rarely apt at choosing good TV shows, he really hit the nail on the head with this one. You never know when someone’s gonna get shot in the head or blown up cooking meth. It’s thrilling.

Parks and Recreation is the new Office for me. I just want the Office to kind of….disappear. It’s run its course. And, is it just me, or is Betty White the “it” girl of 2010? Tune into Hot In Cleveland simply for her one-liners, and it will be worth your time.

    • http://theepezdispenser.blogspot.com/ ePastorJames

Breaking Bad is magnificent. In fact, it was by far the best drama of the season. Here’s hoping it or Dexter pull a gotcha on Mad Men; let’s hope Modern Family does the same to Glee and 30 Rock.

Bear in mind: I love 30R and MM, but they both had wildly uneven seasons. It’s time to spread the damn wealth already.

Although, the best comedy series, Party Down, wasn’t even nominated. Boooooooooo.

      • jukejoint

Since they only judge a few episodes for Emmy consideration, all it takes is a couple of good ones (not a whole season) to win the Emmy. And Mad Men had at least two episodes that were better than anything else on TV last season, so I’d still vote for them.

  • deez

“The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” (NBC)

    LOLOL!!! :) :)

Also, I hope Eric Stonestreet wins. I <3 Cam!!

    • http://theepezdispenser.blogspot.com/ ePastorJames

      Noooooo, TY BURRELL MUST WIN!

I fear for a voting split. Just picture it: All 3 split votes and Jon Cryer wins again. GAG me.

      • deez

I don’t know one person who watches 2 1/2 Men. I’ve caught parts of episodes, and it’s unfunny and unwatchable.

        • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

I have a friend in Paris who loves that show. Besides an ex-boyfriend’s brother, I’ve only met men in Germany or France (in their mid-20s) who watch that show. I have no idea what this says about America, but it can’t be good.

          • http://theepezdispenser.blogspot.com/ ePastorJames

That’s hilarious. The only person I know who still watches that is a chick in Venezuela. Apparently, the show is VERY big in South America….Horrifying commentary on us northern neighbors, indeed.

Two and a Half Men was actually somewhat funny during its first season, mainly due to the women on the show, such as Conchata Ferrell the maid, Holland Taylor the mother, and Melanie Lynskey as the batshit stalker neighbor especially.

But then again, I flove Heavenly Creatures/Kate Winslet, so perhaps I’m biased.

  • Stacy

I am jumping up and down for joy at Chris Colfer’s nomination and there is nothing anyone can say that will make me stop.

Also loving all the Mad Men / The Good Wife nods.

    • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

Even though I hate Glee, I still loved Mike O’Malley’s scene when he went off on that Finn kid.

    • maturin

I share your Colferlove. That fantasy version of “Rose’s Turn” was pretty epic. He’s got a vulnerability and tenderness that really sells what could be a cartoony role.

  • magnacarta

The ‘Actor in Drama’ category is obviously the best. Hugh Laurie, Michael C. Hall, and Jon Hamm in the same category? I wouldn’t even know who to cheer for.

    • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

Not to mention Bryan Cranston. They should just give all of them the award.

    • Pandora

Don’t forget our beloved Kyle Chandler.

  • dixiegal88

Cat Deely is one of the best things about SYTCD. I loved her gentle smack down of Nigel last night and she’s mothers all the contestants after their smackdowns by the jidges. /said with Cat’s accent/. I don’t get it.

  • http://www.detailsinthefabric.tk/ Shosh

Okay I watch Glee, and I don’t hate it, but the only person who REALLY should stand a chance is Jane Lynch. And if Matthew Morrison wins I will punch a baby AND a puppy. I hate that arrogant sonofabitch. He’s even kinda ugly.
Seriously, Glee is up against some awesome stuff.
And I’m worried for NPH, I love those guys from Modern Family.
And Betty White had better win that shit.
    The end.

    • magnacarta

I don’t understand all the hate for Matthew Morrison. I like the character he portrays, but I might be biased.

      • caspar

I don’t completely like his character, and isn’t that the point? I don’t know anything about him other than Glee, but I laugh like hell at his old school hip hop numbers (Ice Ice Baby?? I Wanna Sex You Up?!) Awesome sauce.

Nurse Jackie is a comedy? Huh.

    • OvenMitt

Matt Morrison is almost so ugly that he’s hot. In the immortal words of Anthony Marantino, “ugly sex is hot”.

    • cc

the only person who REALLY should stand a chance is Jane Lynch.

This. I don’t really care about Matthew Morrison but Lea Michele being nominated is the BIG WTF?! moment for me. Ugh!

  • auntieaimee

Parks and Rec gets no respect, man. Ron Swanson and Andy both rule! Glad Amy got a nod, though. Nurse Jackie is a comedy? Really?

    • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

I might be in love with Ron Swanson.

      • auntieaimee

        The ladies love Duke Silver.

      • jukejoint

Ron Swanson + breakfast foods = WIN.
