Is Crystal Bowersox selling out?

2010 June 25
by TopIdol

Tonight, American Idol Season 9 runner up Crystal Bowersox Tweeted a brand new photo of her brand new teeth. (I have no why the third comment down is LEE IS AMMMMAZZZZINGGGG, oh wait, yes I do. People are idiots and feel the need to say such things on other’s people’s oh never fraking mind.)

So Crystal Bowersox, often maligned during the season for her imperfect teeth got a little capping and bonding. Is this selling out? She does look beautiful, but she always was rather striking. Do you think this signifies the beginning of a real journey to selloutland? Or is she just doing this because she can? Would Lauren Hutton like to comment?

But she has convinced me to sleep in my bleaching trays tonight. Her teeth are prettier than mine.

Spread the word. Do it.

Although she may look “pretty,” (and good for her) I will miss that she doesn’t look like her anymore. Did she really have “missing” teeth? Or were they just a bit yellow? Honestly, I never noticed missing teeth–all I noticed was the twinkle in her eyes, a really bright smile, and a softness about her face.

    • deez

There was a gap…IDK if it was necessarily a missing tooth. I thought she was was pretty anyway, even with the “before” teeth.

Geeze, the women on that show really get picked apart, don’t they? Alli for being “fat” lol…she was what? A sz 4?? Carrie got the same thing during her season, so she transformed from a sz 6 into a popsicle stick. God forbid somebody doesn’t look like a supermodel, lol!

      • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

No way Carrie Underwood is a Size 6. I’m a size 6, and there are lots of things I won’t wear. She’s a 2 or a 0 at this point, plus, her head now has that my-head-is-too-big-for-my-malnourished-body look.

  • magnacarta

Nah, that’s not selling out. That said, I don’t like her. To me, she comes off smug and entitled. I also find her boring, and her kind of music honestly puts me to sleep. I don’t wish her ill though. I hope she makes it. Everyone deserves some good things in their lives :)

(Just so we’re clear, I’m not a fan of anyone this season, so don’t start something over my opinion. It’s just an opinion. Don’t take it personally as I did not just insult your mother/sister/daughter. Thank you.)

  • Trish

I think it’s awesome she can afford to do this. Even if she weren’t in the public eye now, why wouldn’t she want to have proper dental care and fix her teeth? She wore braces as a kid, so it’s not like she doesn’t care about her teeth. She just couldn’t afford to in recent years.

And Lee DeWyze’s obnoxious fans over on MJs (the ones who haven’t been banned already) can just bite me. (Although I admit it was kinda fun to see *anybody* from this season attract some bona fide crazies. I enjoyed my popcorn until MJ deleted all those posts.)

  • CayKat

Think she did this just because she could afford to now. As you stated – she’s a pretty woman already, this is just a nice enhancement. I imagine the twitpic is evidence that she is pleased with it. Good for her.

  • Llamakhan

So I finally decided to sign up for this blog after lurking for a long time. The Lee Dewyze Leno blog from MJ’s finally convinced me that the people there are crazy, and Wickedly Dark’s concert review thread was absolutely hilarious.

I’m so sick of Lee fans criticizing Crystal’s looks, so for selfish reasons I’m glad she got her teeth done. I think she is beautiful and the new teeth just accentuate that.

    • nerdgirl

Welcome! Hope you enjoy hanging out here.

    • julcee

Can’t help but comment on the Lee thing. I have been watching some current videos on the AI top 10 rehearsing for the live tour and I noticed something about Lee Dewyze. His body language is very telling like he is annoyed when his friends starts goofing around. Like suddenly he is better than the rest? Ugh. I hope I am wrong because he seems like a nice guy.

      • nerdgirl

He doesn’t seem like a nice guy to me. But what do I know – I don’t follow him at all.

    • songkat7

      Welcome!!

  • julcee

I don’t think she’s selling out. I think getting her teeth fixed is part of the whole package of being a famous singer/star..whatever you call it. The teeth, hair, clothes are all superficial part of her career. It’s still her voice and music and her personality that sets her apart from the rest. Her confidence is building up more and more everyday and you can just feel and see it coming out from her skin. She’s incredible. I hope she doesn’t get rid of the dreads yet.

  • maturin

This is the sort of things that drew me into that stupid show in the first place. When I was in my early 20s, I went through that not a penny in the world phase–moving to a new city with just 1 suitcase of possessions, no insurance, trying to make a dwindling 50 dollars last to the next paycheck. It still kinda makes me happy to see “poor musician kid enjoys prosperity” :-) Plus, I like her face.

  • Miz

I don’t think it’s a sell-out at ALL. It’s about dental, and overall physical, health. Yes, having those two missing teeth replaced gives her a more pleasing appearance that may have been a distraction from her singing to viewers. But missing teeth can cause tremendous problems down the line as we age.

As someone who has never had dental insurance and has had to scrape to even have emergency dental work done, this is exactly what I’d put my money on if I won the life lottery.

    Keep smiling and singing, Crystal!

    • ross

I know what you mean, Miz. I’m in the same boat. Teeth! Ugh.

As others have said, she’s not selling out, she just has enough money to get her teeth fixed and she probably would have done it before if she had it.

Something on AI that made me sort of question Crystal was how she was shown getting a tattoo as a tribute to her kid, and at the same time talking about struggling financially, and going on AI for the sake of the kid. I was like, “So save money and don’t get a useless tattoo.” Sorry, just my reaction.

      • Miz

Ross, that struck me too. Granted, I don’t know how much tattoos cost. I also don’t know if that was part of the wardrobe/styling budget. I know they get freebies from businesses trying to get promotion. For example, last year Gibson gave all the top 10 (think it was 10) guitars even though some of them did not play at all.

        • ross

Good point, Miz. I never thought of that..

        • J

Tattoos range in price from $50 for a very small black or grey tat to hundreds for a large colorful one. The cost of your average tattoo would definitely cover the price of a dental cleaning and check up. I wonder if Crystal decided to get the dental work done on her own or if her management team asked her to get the work done. Either way, she looks pretty and I’m sure she likes the results.

I don’t consider it selling out. I simply think of it as life and all of our lives include compromises. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t had to do something that they don’t agree with or believe in to help them succeed in their job, relationship or education.

    • soxrocks

Well said Miz – it really stinks having to scrape $$ together for emergency dental work. I agree she looks terrific. She was always beautiful in my book, but she made a wise and healthy decision to have her teeth done. She won’t regret it and I say “good for her”. Mind you, I also said “good for her” when she rejected the initial offer of the NY dentist to have them done a couple months ago. She sets a fine example of being comfortable with who you are. She decided to do them on her terms and her timing.

  • http://8sourcandy.wordpress.com/ 8sourcandy

I liked her from the start and found her teeth her only draw back. So, I am happy she had her teeth fixed and do not feel in doing so she sold out in anyway. I am sure if she could have afforded to do this sooner she would have. A stylist would be nice too; not to change her boho look, just enhance and define it more. Make it more signature. I hope she keeps the dreads.

    • mcgr45

LOLOLOL-ROTFL-My hubby and I just talked about Crystal last night-before I knew about this. The first thing he said was-she will drop the boyfriend (which she did with the mutual breakup), get new teeth, and change the hair in a matter of days. I told him he was CRAZY and that she was more a “Deadhead” type chick then anything else. Oh well, as long as it DOES NOT CHANGE HER ABILITY TO SING, then I think it is fine, if it makes her feel better about herself. I GUARANTEE, that they did Market Research on her…GURANTEE IT!!! She wants to be succesfull so she did a little “selling out”…

      • mcgr45

One more add on-hubby said she probably never had gone to the dentist before and
probably was a bit scared to get dental work- she was “struggling” to get by before Idol
so-that probably also has something to do with why she did this now. But I still find
it interesting that she waited until right before the tour to do this.

        • Trish

There were photographs of her on the show where she had braces, so that’s not the case. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if she hadn’t seen a dentist regularly in several years. Dental care is f*cking expensive, and there are so many BAD dentists out there doing more harm than good. It ain’t easy to find a reputable dentist.

          • ross

It’s possible she did see a dentist regularly and still had somewhat bad teeth. Lots of people just have less-that-white teeth, gaps, etc.
It takes more than going to the dentist to change this stuff. It often takes oral surgeons and orthodontists, and thousands of dollars.

I’m against the trend of getting ultra-neon-white teeth. It doesn’t look natural and I think it’s just a way to get people to part with their money. Hers look okay, though. Hard to tell from a photo, anyway.

          • ross

            correction: “less-than-white”

    • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

I hope she keeps the dreads, too. Someone was saying how they could cut them out at this point, with her hair being long enough, but I think I would be disappointed if she lost such a distinct part of her “look.” Sure, people get sick of things. But she can wait until the second album or something.

  • caspar

Speaking of weaves, I assume that’s next for Crystal. Her hair is grown out enough that they can chop off those matted messes and give her some ‘magic hair’ as Kathy Griffin calls it.

I’m actually surprised she went along with this. I wonder if their contracts are such that the performer is legally obligated to conform to management appearance standards?

    • muzikizmi

Smart pop singers know that looks do matter. The less attractive singers can get by if they slut it up or go for shock value. Attractive people just have an easier time in the entertainment industry, so why make it tougher than it needs to be?

      • Destry

Sucks that it’s gotta be that way of course. Plus I think people would probably give her a harder time if she didn’t get her them fixed. They’d be all “what statement is she trying to make? does she think she’s too good for dental hygiene? is she really that oblivious to her looks?” (and then I bitch slap them all)

        • Destry

          urgh! *didn’t get them fixed

          • ross

            Hi, Destry!

        • Lauren

DESTRY, YOU’RE BACK!!!!!!!! You and Marissa need to stay and keep me company. Stop going away. :(

          • Lauren

Oh and ITA re: Crystal’s teeth.

          • Destry

Sorry! Don’t feel abandoned! I just don’t get to hang around my laptop much these days. Soon I’ll probably get to only post biannually (grrrr) but I’ll still be around! :)

          • Lauren

Only biannually? What could possibly part you from the internet for so long? *Can’t even imagine*

          • Destry

LOL! Okay, maybe not biannually, but it feels that way when you miss your favorite blogs for a couple of weeks. It’s such a hard life being an internet fiend.

            Hi ross!

  • cb

That’s something I would have done with the money if I were her. I think fixing your teeth and maintaining dental health so you have them for life is a worthwhile investment.
And I’m a no on the boob jobs too. Didn’t Kellie Pickler do that?

    • muzikizmi

Uh, yeah, unless 20 year old women naturally go from flat to stripper overnight, Kellie Pickler had a boob job. IMO, it’s too bad, she went for the stipper sized models. She may as well tatoo ‘fake boobs’ on her forehead.

      • caspar

One reason I never could understand the hate/ ‘OMG, she’s such a tramp’ talk about
Kim Caldwell was that – flat chested as she is – she’s never gone the boob job route.
(That and she knows how to keep her mouth shut). That must be really tough in today’s
        Hollywood scene.

        • caspar

Sorry about the way that looks- trying to compensate for the wonky posting here.

    • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

Kellie Pickler has had so much work done, she should let Joan Rivers adopt her at this point. She looks ridiculous. And she’s only 23 or 24 years old now! You don’t get that kind of work done at such a young age and not expect to pay for it later. I’m sure she’ll keep at it, too. And look frightening hell, by the time she hits 35. Hopefully, she will be broke and living in a trailer again by that point, or at least not in the public eye. I would be happy if I never saw that nitwit again.

  • d. b. cooper

Regarding the title question: What does she have to sell? It’s a dubious proposition that she ever had any musical integrity. Perhaps at some point she did, but once you sign a contract with 19e you’re pretty much off the artistic roll call, no? At this point she’s just a talented puppet with noticeably whiter teeth.

Get that money, girl, good for you.

  • Mysterioso

Crystal looks nice with her new smile, and now no one can make fun of her for that.

    • auntieaimee

      Agreed.

  • Sandy

Good for her! I’m glad she is in a position where she can afford to do this now.

  • Blue Eyes

No, I don’t think she sold out. Everybody wants pretty teeth and a pretty smile. I believe in doing things that boost your self-confidence, as long as they aren’t too extreme.

  • jukejoint

I don’t care if she got her teeth fixed. It would bug me, too, if I read the internet and saw everybody yakking about my crystal meth teeth.

I draw the line at boob jobs, though. (Speaking of boob jobs, has anyone tried to read those terrible Girl With the Dragon Tattoo books that keep being advertised on this page???? Hokey smokey, those things are misogynistic while pretending to be all about Girl Power in the face of unspeakable sexual violence and cruelty. I am very disappointed that some liberal Swedish guy — since I am both liberal and a Swede-o-phile — wrote these pieces of trash and that they are so popular.)

    • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

I do get the argument about those books, but…they’re like crack. like absolute crack. I’ve read all three. What bugged me, however, was that the awesome heroine, Lisabeth Salander, gets a boob job.

They’re not as bad as some have claimed them to be, and if you read them, you’ll see that they’re not as vile as you think they may be. I’m a huge fan of Scandi crime fiction. Which reminds me I have to pick up another Henning Mankell book this weekend.

      • jukejoint

I was conflicted as to whether all the sexual violence was to expose evil in the world or to be titilating to creepy weirdo people who love that sort of thing, but the boob job kind of put me over the line into creepy weirdo. I realize that the boob job is not sexual violence, but it so undermined Lisbeth for me.

Have you seen the Swedish movie of the first book? I kind of liked it, but it was very hard to watch. And, again, the boob job has turned me off the books completely.

        • deez

OK, so even though I’ve sworn to read it, I still haven’t done it. So what level of “yuck” are we talking here?? If I’m not grossed out by a James Ellroy novel, will this bother me?

        • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

Judging by Larsson’s beliefs throughout his short life, he was trying to expose sexual violence & evil. I think he also knew what made a compelling story. Like I said, I see the complaints about this and have thought about it. In a way, the boob job kind of makes sense with her burgeoning confidence in herself, perhaps? But yet it seemed slightly out of character. Yet in a way it did not. An extension of her buying the huge flat, maybe?

I still need to see the first movie. And the second one comes out in a couple of weeks. I’m pissed I haven’t seen the first yet, as I was eagerly awaiting the release.

        • justpeachy

I saw the first movie last weekend. I have to be honest, by the end it just seemed like an extended “Law and Order: Criminal Intent” episode to me. I liked most of it, just difficult to watch certain scenes. I read maybe the first chapter of the book, but couldn’t get into it at the time. I’d been thinking about picking it up again, but after seeing the movie, I probably won’t.

      • erinnthered

Is there a new Henning Mankell? I can’t believe I found someone else who reads Henning Mankell. I love Scandi crime fiction and films. I’m supposed to borrow the first Dragon Tattoo book from a friend. I should get on that…

        • finnreader

What? We are thousands, at least here in Finland! I have all he has written in my shelf!

      • CayKat

I just got the book and started reading recently – sadly, only a few pages a day so far. I’m enjoying it and, despite TI’s spoilers here AHEM! COUGH COUGH, I will continue through :-)

Aww, tard art Crystal got her teeth fixed too.

    • Mugsy

      ^^Hahahahahaha!!

    • Trish

      LOLOLOL

  • nerdgirl

Although I cannot fault anybody for fixing their teeth (it’s America after all, go Crystal!), I do think that Crystal has compromised her integrity on Idol, starting with stripper shoes and hideous outfit she wore for Midnight Train to Georgia to her too cool for school attitude. I am not sure what, but something rubs me the wrong way about Crystal. I cannot figure it out yet. She reminds me somehow of David Cook, who is great and everything, but leaves me cold.

I hope she is successful in her career, however, I won’t be buying her CD, sorry.

    • CayKat

I think this is what D.B Cooper was talking about with “It’s a dubious proposition that she ever had any musical integrity”

re: your feelings about Crystal – I am right there with you. I started out as a supporter but, with each interview, she distances me more and more. To the point where I don’t actually read anything about her anymore unless it’s on this blog.

      • CayKat

mind you – I don’t think getting your teeth fixed is a bad thing.

        • nerdgirl

Fixing teeth – good, posting picture of your (new) teeth on – WTF?

  • margie

No I don’t think she is selling out either. I think she looks pretty. I am glad she didn’t go bright white where they blind you. Her teeth look natural.

  • Mary

I don’t consider it selling out :) She looks great!

And I agree with songkat, if she has these opportunities given to her to make an improvement, why not?

BUT if we ever see her performing and her face isn’t moving, than that would be a different story!

  • Lauren

I don’t consider it selling out. Her teeth look pretty. Everyone wants pretty teeth…that’s why most people have worn braces at some point in their life.

  • jeydawg

Good for her. I don’t blame her a bit for fixing it, but I’m honestly surprised it took this long, considering all the stories you hear about everyone’s makeovers that they get soon after they hit the Idol stage. (And for some reason this makes me think of an episode of America’s Next Top Model I saw where some poor girl spent hours and hours and hours inside a dentist’s office – at least 18 hours – getting just two teeth fixed because it had to be done fast.)

    • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

I WAS JUST ABOUT TO BRING THAT ONE UP! Who was it? Danielle? (Danielle is one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITES!) I felt so bad for that poor girl. It wasn’t Danielle, was it? Another girl that season? I should know this!

      • nerdgirl

Danielle is from Arkansas! I love pointing this out.

        • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

Danielle was the first ANTM model to have her Cover Girl contract extended beyond the obligatory year!

      • songkat7

Danielle had her gap closed, but it was Joanie who got the majority of her upper teeth capped with veneers. All to correct one snaggletooth.

        • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

I was going to guess Joanie. Dammit. I suck. (I swear I was!) I liked Joanie, too. That was a great season. I mean cycle. That was a great cycle.

          • songkat7

Agreed. Joanie and Danielle were both pretty upstanding people. It was one of those situations where you honestly didn’t know who you wanted to win because they were both so great, so nice, and really sweet.

          • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

I’ve also always LOATHED Jaslene. And Naima bored me to tears, too. Joanie & Danielle were the first season where I was really happy how it all went down, and I would have been thrilled regardless of who won.

          • margie

I wanted to punch Nahima (sp? the bald African girl) and the troll haired girl who was already like 28 that season. Man that girl was a bitch on wheels.

      • jeydawg

I couldn’t remember her name either, although I remember that I actually liked that girl and felt so bad for her having to go through that. I just remember her sitting in front of the camera in tears ’cause she’d been there for HOURS and they still weren’t even CLOSE to being done. Didn’t help my slight phobia of dentists, either!

      • MaryS-NJ

Danielle – my favorite! Her gap tooth was endearing but her fixed teeth made her more “high fashion” I suppose. Whatever. She’s beautiful either way. I can still hear her drawl “Lash Blast”.

    • Mary

Who was the chick who had the bad-weave-gone-wrong experience and than was constantly crying about it? I don’t know why I am remembering this but now its bothering me.

      • margie

I think that was Brittany or something. Different season. You are talking about the red haired girl right?

        • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

It’s difficult to figure out who was the contestant (in oh so many CYCLES) with the bad weave experience ;)

      • jukejoint

Plus there was the infamous “She poured beer on my weave!”

        • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

Best line ever. That was Tiffany, the season before she made it-made it (and when she got eliminated Tyra got all dramatic on her ass and screamed that never had one of the beautiful girls standing before her made her SO MAD) when they went out to a bar during the final selection weekend. And then they got into a bar fight. And then:

BITCH POURED BEER IN MY WEAVE!!

      • Mary

Yah I think Margie is right! I haven’t watched Top Model since the season that Russian chick was in the Final 2 but didn’t win so I am completely out of the loop. Me and my friend were talking about the show earlier today and we were talking about that Britany girl for some reason and couldn’t remember her name.

TI you must tell me what season and episode that was because I must. watch. it. now!

        • margie

Oh I loved Nastaha. Her and Danielle are my faves from the Top Idol cycles.

      • Mary

Oh by the way. My friend did some modeling in Toronto and she said that Jay Manual is the biggest diva ever!

        • Mary

          Oh, by the way, **********

  • StopHurtsEars

    Nawh. IMO Not selling out.

Elliott Yamin did it and no one said he was selling out. And they actually did a better job on Crystal’s teeth. Her teeth are appropriately sized and look natural. I think when Elliott had his done they were much to large for his mouth. I haven’t checked lately to see if they were resized. I don’t think Crystal’s bad teeth were due to lack of hygiene but a combination of, like Elliott, her diabetes and perhaps a lack of dental insurance. It’s not like a Hilliary duff situation were her teeth were already white and perfectly in line to begin with but she got some big horse teeth for some odd Hollywood reason.

    • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

She looks stunning. I doubt she’ll stop smiling for weeks. I wouldn’t. I remember what it was like getting my braces off.

      • songkat7

I’m actually supposed to get braces now (at age 46!). Seems I have a deep bite that is messing up my front teeth some. The bonus will be that my gap will eventually be closed.

I probably won’t recognize myself, but I will be so glad when it’s finally done.

  • Sara Elizabeth

Her teeth look nice. Good for her.

She had said “No thanks LA Dentists, I’m beautiful just as I am” or something like that during the season. Depending on what got her to change her mind is what determines if she’s on her way to selloutland to me.

    • et

I think that reaction was more to the whole tone of that dentist – it was so condescending, it made me want to yell, lol. If it makes her happy, good for her. She’s such a pretty girl, fixed teeth or not. Hopefully there’s no selling out involved!

      • MaryS-NJ

This. I think that dentist’s offer came off as a little patronizing.

Crystal’s naturally pretty anyway and the new smile suits her. No doubt Crystal’s had conversations with dentists since then about why having her teeth fixed will not just provide a cosmetic benefit but a health benefit. She’s been communicating with Elliott Yamin recently and he did the same. Why not? She has insurance now.

  • songkat7

As someone who has always hated the gap in my front teeth, I really love that she did this. Not that her teeth bothered me, and I know she’s always seemed comfortable with herself, but when you have the ways and means to make an improvement like this, why not? :)

    • songkat7

And it sure looks a lot more believable than the chicklets that Elliott Yamin got.

      • Paulie

I just logged on and was about to comment that if fixing teeth is selling out, Elliott would be the biggest sellout. :)
