Idol Quickies: June 29, 2010

2010 June 29

If The Washington Post offices go down in flames today, don’t be surprised. Critic Chris Richards will likely return home from work this morning to find dead fish on his doorstep, wrapped in glitter, of course. Richards reviewed Adam Lambert’s Washington D.C. show last night. Oh who are we kidding? Those dead fish are already on his doorstep.

This snarky, condescending and inaccurate review is hardly worthy of the Washington Post.

Just do it. Since the Post has often been known for having a somewhat conservative bent, just say what you want to say.

Your Ombudsman should take note. This marks the second time in the last week in which the Washington Post embarrasses itself by allowing an uninformed, biased blogger with an agenda to spew opinions that are out of sync with reality. As a Libertarian I was as offended by the Dave Weigel debacle as I was by this ridiculous hatchet job. The Post is becoming a disappointment.

Was that YOU, Kerry Kolsch? And I wonder how old this biddy is. They all say the same damn thing, don’t they?

This is the most ridiculous review I’ve ever read about Adam! This writer is obviously way too old to be going to, let alone appreciate, an Adam Lambert concert! Adam is brilliant and beautiful inside and out! After all of his years of experience on stage, he knows who he is and he’s comfortable in his own skin. Maybe try out a Kris Allen concert Chris, I think he’s more your speed.
GlamNation is amazing and coming to a city near you! :)

SHUT THE FRAK UP ABOUT BRIAN FRAKING MAY.

You are entitled to your opinion. I respectfully disagree. Adam Lambert is a once in a generation talent. Producer Rob Cavallo, Brian May of Queen, and others agree with me. His tour so far has been sold out. Apparently, your opinion is in the distinct minority.

Buy a silver pendant designed by Crystal Bowersox for Pennyroyal Silver and help support Toledo, Ohio’s Red Cross. 30% of all sales go to the organization.

La Princesa del Mariachi continues her crusade of cool. Homegirl likes Portishead. (Yeah, Katie Stevens. I’m looking at your smug teenage face. You know who Portishead is? You think its a line of edgy surfing attire, don’t you?)

Big Mike Lynche is on Twitter now and he loves to say bad words! I might like him a bit more than I ever did on the show, plus we all know kiddies don’t watch American Idol anymore so there shouldn’t be any of those OMG WHAT WILL THE CHILDREN DO concerns.

Kris Allen and the Kris Allen Band are planning on covering MGMT in the very near future. He told Jim Cantiello this in an interview before this past weekend’s show in NYC. And the other guys in the band talk, too!

Spread the word. Do it.

A comment on Kris’ remark to Jim C., on this evening’s headlines thread of MJ’s:

Kris was upset that someone took a picture of him while he was on vacation and put it on the web? how is that any different from him taking a pic of an old lady in a wheelchair plying the slots and posting it on twitter? The money? Sorry, hard to feel sorry for him.

    • mtlfan

don’t see any thing in common between the 2 things excpet we’re talking about a photo. They say intelligence is the ability to figure out differences.. some have not been very gifted

      • ross

The way I saw it was: basically, any excuse to bring up, yet again, the same ol’ shit.

        • deez

Oh JFC…he wasn’t UPSET. He said he was embarrassed because he looked “pasty.” Tweeting an anonymous video isn’t exactly the same thing as having your picture all over the tabloids.
The Sparkler probably didn’t even listen to the interview.

        • mtlfan

ross, yeah…i agree….that’s even less smart..

        • ross

I’m sure the sparkler didn’t listen to the interview.
They just like to bring up that video. Didn’t Zebra29 bring it up constantly? I just hate how they need to fart on the parade.

        • ross

Kris had an Jim C interview and it went over well. Someone brought it up in a positive way on that blog. So it’s typical of the Glam Squad to counter with something negative about Kris and relate it to the interview. I see it as not letting anyone get away with saying anything good about Kris. Nip it in the bud. This seems to be the usual pattern, doesn’t it?

But between songs, he offered charms of the aw-shucks variety, appearing geeky and affable while introducing his backing musicians. After giving his drummer the green light to dive into a solo, the singer blurted out, “Oooh, cowbell!”

And that was the one moment where Lambert offered a true glimpse-of-self amid the campy, prefab charade that comprised the rest of the evening. And no, there’s nothing wrong with campy, pre-fab charades. But Lambert hasn’t fully learned how to inhabit his character — he hasn’t even figured out who that Aquanet-doused character might actually be.

I think this is a very perceptive part of the review. Seems to me a lot of people on this blog have said variations of this for a while now. I think it’s a valid criticism.

Part of the problem is that Idol gives you glimpses of who people are, and encourages you to fall in love with them and vote for them as people as much as performers. This is what the show is all about and what perpetuates the show. So I think that the bigger the disconnect is between the person the viewers perceive you to be, and your performing persona, the harder it’s going to be to get people to accept that performing persona.

But I also think Adam has some trouble figuring out what he wants to be onstage and what his character is. It’s kind of like on the AI finals when he sang Mad World dressed as a kind of Andrew Lloyd Webber character, and there were smoke effects, and all. I didn’t really get it. I don’t know who/what that was supposed to be, or refer to. To me it was just someone saying, “I like dressing up and wearing makeup, and I like smoke effects and lights.” But it has to be specific, or refer to the song, or have some specific meaning for the audience.

Very perceptive, Ross. I approve this post!

The review seemed harsh-but-fair to me. I’ve seen reviewers be much more personally horrible to musicians they don’t like, but I got the impression that he reather liked Adam as a person.

Portishead? Allison is one cool chick :D

    Is this new? http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/5499872/adam_lambert_vs_kris_allen_separating_pg2.html?cat=2

    My investigation psychotic crusade into
American Idol voting has bought out various fractions hell bent on deterring me from publicizing what I have uncoveredgoogled. There are blogs (HEY!!! Ya think she means us??? :) )that devote themselves to hating Adam and maligning me pointing out my delusions. I have been accused of slander, lying, insanity, stupidity, and even criminal activity(You got that right). My book has been altered (by YOU)and pirated for illegal downloads(where’s the lawler letters??? ). Cyber stalkers and cyber squatters have illegally used my name (hahahaha O RLY?? Then STOP BITCHING and bring on the lawler letters!!!)and the name of my business on twitter and blog accounts. They call me “crazy” and say I am “hating” on Kris (LoL!!!! That’s really no secret). Some of the more deviant(ooooooh! DEVIANT!) members of this group seem to think that I can be pushed to the brink of sanity (PUSHED TO THE BRINK OF SANITY?? Nope, you were up to your ankles headfirst in KRAZZZZZY before we ever got an earful of your nonsense) by their torment challenge to a debate. I am not like the cowards who hide behind fake names to carry out their illegal and obnoxious behavior(except when I commit REAL ESTATE FRAUD). They are foolish enough to believe that they are untraceable even though they post at my websites with their e-mail addresses. (OK den where’s my lawler letter?)

THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE, JUST LIKE YOU, KERRY! What’s your real name, Kerry? Does your husband know you’re roaming the interwebs proclaiming to be a lesbian? Does the Bar Association know you’re claiming to be a lawyer when your license lapsed a long time ago? What else are you lying about? We know all the positive Amazon reviews are your multiple personalities. How often are you seeing a doctor? Have you told your doctor about your paranoia? Where do you think you are going to go with this never ending crap? What are you hoping to achieve, other than a long rest in a nuthouse? Only you care about this imaginary scandal. Only you are beating this dead horse. Although we do enjoy watching you do it, it’s very entertaining. But how long can you sustain the crazy for? Are your neighbours frightened of you?

  • Lucky

Look, I know we are not supposed to tard over Kris’ band, but Damn, Latin Jesus is hot! And I usually don’t go for his type.

    • Lauren

I noticed that too. I don’t really tard over Kris’s band but I was thinking about how attractive he was while I was watching the interview. xD

      • Verbally Dyslexic

He is pretty cute in real life. And tiny. I’m not even 5’2″ and was in kitten heels facing him and I’m pretty sure he wasn’t that much taller than me.

        • Lauren

Awww that endears him to me more :)

        • ross

          Who’s tiny? Torres? He’s not.

    • Mary

I agree!! Latin Jesus is really hot. I just want him to cut his hair.

  • deez

Oh man, I was hoping to find video of Justin Gaston from last night, so far…nada. Perhaps that’s best?

  • Dickory Dock

Eh. The review was a bit on the harsh side but I agree with a lot of what he said. The Glamnards are in fine form though. They make me tired. Where the hell do they get the energy to be in RAGE mode all the damn time?

So, when do we get to talk about really important stuff, like Mad Men? Just finished watching all of Season 3 and OH. MY. GOD. Awesome. (Got the Don Draper header this time. <3)

  • kimberly

Finally, some of the media are rubbing the glitter from their eyes and actually taking a good hard look at Lambert, stating the good, but not glossing over the not so good. The way it should be for every artist, the way it should have been a year ago.

Adam has got to realize at this point, he can’t control them. The BSC fans are a double-edged sword. They serve a purpose, have their uses, but is the price too high?

    • ross

Running through my mind as I read that review was, “the Emperor has no clothes.”

  • Katie112

Brian May failed so badly (almost as badly as Carly Smithson) when he predicted that Madam’s turd would become an instant hit.

    To quote:
“Adam’s voice reaches out with sensitivity, depth, maturity, and awesome range and power that will make jaws drop all around the world”.

EPIC FAIL! My jaw dropped because I was amazed how someone from such a legendary band could admire crap like that. I’d be surprised if he still supports Madam. The cows keep bringing up these people who threw a compliment or two at Madam. Thing is, if they think Madam is so great, why won’t they work with him? At this point, I can’t decide who’s the bigger failure; Madam or his cows?

    • jazz

I’m pretty sure the glittercows are the bigger failure!

      • Mysterioso

I can just imagine Brian May, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant, sitting around their mansions all day listening to “For Your Entertainment” and painting their nails.

        • Burgundy LaRue

Brian May failed so badly (almost as badly as Carly Smithson) when he predicted that Madam’s turd would become an instant hit.

I think May have been looking at Adam from an ‘on paper’ POV. The idea of Adam becoming a glam-pop star looks great, but the execution? Remains to be seen.

          • FreeDavidCook

Brian is all about the money so I’m thinking he thought Adam stood to be the biggest cash cow ever. Brian is whorey like that.

          • muzikizmi

RCA (Sony) was trying to cross publicize Meatloaf, Brian MAy and Adam. Rob Cavallo was the one who tied the others together. He was producing for Meatloaf (ft. Brian May) and he produced Time For Miracles for the Sony movie.

This woman needs to be committed.

I just sent an email to Washington Post Customer Service, Reader Feedback and the Ombudsman complaining about Mr. Richard’s biased review. I have put my home delivery subsription on hold until a retraction is posted. here are the email addresses:interactivity@washingtonpost.com, custhelp-wp@washingtonpost.com, ombudsman@washpost.com (ombudsman may be the most important of these addresses)
here is the text of my email:
I have put a vacation hold on my Washington Post Sunday subscription until I decide what to do after reading Chris Richards extremely biased, unfair, hateful and bordering on homophobic review of last night’s Adam Lambert concert at the 9:30 club. Please see the more than 120 comments, mostly from incensed people who attended the concert, most of whom thought it was one of the best performances they had ever seen in their life. All bloggers are entitled to their opinions and a fair and honest negative review is always welcome, but this review is so clearly inconsistent with the views of nearly everyone that commented on the article, that it should be considered biased and unfair. A retraction should be posted and the right of Mr. Richards to blog on washingtonpost.com should be reviewed. Perhaps Mr. Richards should blog independently, but having his biased views posted on washingtonpost.com drastically reduces the credibility of your site. I have been a subscriber for 8 years and will likely cancel my subscription if some correction to this abhorrent review is not made.

          • muzikizmi

That woman needs an intervention. BSC just isn’t ‘out there’ enough to describe this one. There is a man who does menial chores, for my employer. He is violently psychotic without his medication, which is hand delivered and administerd by a state worker every day. Maybe the District of Columbia has a similar program that could help this woman.

  • FreeDavidCook

He missed a sterling opportunity to see the crazy upclose and personal by not going by earlier and seeing the Glammits camping outside in the crazy stupid heat. I still want to know how many of them fainted. The club isn’t in a good area, surrounded by industrial and warehouses without a nearby McDonalds. The place is kind of a dump, truth be told. That’s some impressive ‘tour’ he’s giving.

I feel almost sorry for Adam because it does seem like he’s playing a role that isn’t a good fit. At least I feel sorrow until he gives that self satisfied smirk in his videos and that all evaporates.

Wonder how Adam got past the Glammits without getting pawed and hair yanked and slimed with sweaty sweat. No good way in or out of that place for the headliner.

    • margie

To be fair Kris’s fans made the Fresno news for standing outside in line in 108 degree weather.

I always do kind of enjoy clicking on lame E! Online articles and seeing some crap spewed about Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston. Where do those people hide?

          • FreeDavidCook

Yeah, but that’s The Who, THE WHO, actual talented world famous band, not an AI runner up always a bridesmaid. And I doubt any of those Who fans camped out overnight trying to be the first ones in the door.

        • Pandora

Because the REAL TRUE BESTEST fans are the ones who have the least actual life other than that part which revolves around their Idol. Don’t you know that the person who waits in line the longest gets extra fan points, which they someday hope to trade in for an actual 7 seconds of real live interaction with His Glitteriness?

          • w.dark

When I went to see David Cook he signed autographs afterwards. I hovered around and listened to people vying to be the most important fantard:

“I came all the way from England.”

“I spent $600 on your Axium CDs.” <— yes, that was the dollar figure.

“Remember me? I stood for 8 hours in the freezing cold while I was 6 months pregnant to see you last winter! I had the baby!” <– seriously. I’d put that up there with drinking and smoking as harmful to the infant. And stupid.

It took me a while to pick my jaw up off the ground.

        • deez

I seriously don’t get it. It’s not like they’re waiting in line for tickets. PEOPLE!! You already have a seat! It’s a small theater! You will see/hear everything without sitting in the H E A T for 8 hours!

          • Paulie

This may sound tard-ish but I think part of the reason
is that they’re waiting for the soundcheck (and possible meet and greet of course). What they’re soundchecking are being tweeted y’know. :P

Well, that was my reason anyway back in my boyband-stalking days

          • old bat

Festival seating aka general admission = no seats. I stood for Mr Allen after a long day of standing up at work when he came to my area for a little, mostly unpublicised concert. I should get Chick-fil-a vouchers or cheese dip points for my standing efforts in tarding. Though admittedly I did not wait outside the venue but arrived marginally on time due to work.

          • Lauren

@Deez, they probably don’t have a seat yet. The concert I’m going to is all GA. I’m getting there early, but like an hour, not early in the morning.

          • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

            Take photos. Please :)

          • Lauren

There’s a possibility. It’s up to my camera though, it has good days and bad days.

        • et

But you have to be UP FRONT and maybe your Idol will notice you and crown you #1 SUPAHFAN.

          • old bat

Myself, I would think the view matters too. For the show I went to, I was lucky to find a clear raised area, at some distance from the stage, but I like distance because I can’t take too much noise. I would not have liked to be stuck in the milling crowd and staring at the tops of strangers’ heads.

  • margie

Jim interview with Kris and the band is up. It is 8 parts.
    (ITS POSTED ABOVE)

    • Pandora

I love how embarrassed HBD was by the shirtless photos, and the reaction they caused.

      • alicat10025

this made me laugh – and I love how Cale, I think , was all about, “people were clearly looking for these” because of what happened when they were on google

        • deez

LOL….Jim on Lady Gaga…Maybe you should’ve caused a disturbance (at the Mets game) and worn crazy stuff like a cone bra. Kris- Nah I didn’t have any of that stuff….it was on the bus.

Ryland seems like a funny dude.

Iwas hoping for a review of the show. I was thinking he reviewed Adam’s show…maybe I’m confused. Does MTV not review Idol shows?

          • margie

Deez I think this interview was before the show.

          • Paulie

Ryland is very chatty! I like him more now. Hehe!

          • deez

Oh! Did he attend the show??? I’m curious as to his thoughts on it.

          • Paulie

deez, not yet as I’m in a Krandrew shipping mode the past 36 hours. :) I’ll change it tomorrow in time for Eclipse. :P

It was a free show, I don’t think they get reviewed, necessarily.

          • snapcracklypop

Thanks girl :) I saw your comment on the MTV article on the interview.

    • naiya

I was initially hoping “The Truth” would die a quick, painless death, but now I really want to see the creepy video. Hopefully the song will be around long enough for me to see it.

  • et

My sister sent me that Post article since she’s a semi-Glambert, but even she was horrified at the comments (and she truly believes that all *Kris* fans are mean and nasty and all they do is say horrible things about Adam, so this was truly shocking for her to see the Hive at work). They sound like idiots, and they aren’t helping their ELVISPLANTROCKGAWD with their attacks every time someone fails to kiss his glittery ass. Gah, Glamberts. Oh, how I loathe thee.

    • MissMyEm

This always amazes me. How can they not realize that they are making themselves look bad as well as making Adam look bad? Do they think all their comments will turn the opinions of the writers? I just am always dumbfounded. I think at this point most reporters know they will get creamed if they write a bad report and at this point, I’m thinking the Glamberts have a worse rep than the Claymates ever had.

    • parsenip

This writer is obviously way too old to be going to, let alone appreciate, an Adam Lambert concert!

      Priceless.

      • et

LOL, parsenip, did someone actually say that? A Glambert? That’s so funny.

        • parsenip

Yes. It’s in one of the comments TI posted above. The comment ends with this gem:

GlamNation is amazing and coming to a city near you!

          Seriously, who talks like that?

          • Pandora

People who don’t get out much. ;)

  • margie

I am intrigued by Kris and the band covering MGMT “Electric Feel”. I love that song. Can’t wait to see what they do.

Wow that Washington Post review was harsh. That is how I feel about Adam’s show based on youtube videos, but I would of been nicer than this guy. Ouch. Adam can take it though. It is the first review that the reviewer didn’t suck his dick. :)

  • deez

Why the posting of, and subsequent laughing at, this:

    ?????????

What does that have to do with the review?

    • http://lakshmigandhi.wordpress.com/ Lakshmi

The guy in the video is Chris Richards, the Washington Post critic that wrote the review.

      • et

I still want to know what it has to do with the review. His opinion of Adam has to be validated or not by his own music? He’s still entitled to an opinion.

Bleh. The Hive is back in action!

        • deez

Exactly. You don’t have to be Rembrandt to know that Thomas Kinkade sucks (just an example, not comparing anything here, Adam =/=kinkade…he’s waaaaaaaaay better than that, just an observation about the relevance of posting the video)

          • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

Thomas Kinkade regularly gets arrested for drunk & disorderly conduct. This is his most redeeming quality.

        • Paulie

Wait, this video was posted to be pointed and laughed at? Poor guy.

I find the point-and-laugh ironic though considering the tons of WTF BSC materials in the Internets.

    • saskin

What does that have to do with the review?

Hmm. I think the theory is, to criticize Lambert you have to be a better and commercially more successful singer than him but any retard can over-praise him ’cause He. Is. That. Good. Baby. Does that make sense?

      • Pandora

Oooh! Does that mean that Bieber could legitimately critique Lambert’s vocal abilities? What about Jason DeRulo? Or the dude from Nickelback?

        • saskin

Nope. It is not ‘and/or’. It is ‘and’. They have to be both. In glamland that means MJ, Elvis and Freddie Mercury.

          • Burgundy LaRue

So in order to critique Adam, you must be dead first. On some level, that makes sense for the Glamberts.

          • Pandora

OK, off the top of my head, here is a partial list of who could “legitimately” critique the Glitter God: Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, Harry Connick Jr., Michael Buble, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Placido Domingo, Billy Joel, Roger Daltrey. Maybe Axl Rose.

A few of these may not have the O!M!G! range that Lambert does, but they are all better SINGERS, as in interpreters of SONGS. At least in my opinion, and it’s just as valid as any Glambert’s opinion. So there.

      • et

Oh, ok, that’s right. Or you have to be Brian May :)

  • Blue Eyes

When are people going realize that Adam is not everyone’s cut of tea? He does a lot of off-key screaming and that’s not singing. Reviewers are just as entitled as anyone else to say they don’t like it.

    • Blue Eyes

      cup of tea

      Sorry, can’t type today.

    • old bat

I think his screaming is pretty on-key. I don’t like it all, unless I turn the volume down really, really low, but it’s on-key if nothing else. I can admire that much in a screamer. Off-key screaming would be Danny Gokey’s Dream on.

Adam has excellent pitch most of the time, but on the few occasions I have heard him do For Your Entertainment and If I Had You live (not recently though), he just sounded uncomfortably off and strange to me. Like the songs are just not suited to his style of singing, maybe.

      • deez

I think he’d be better served by losing the “concept” performance bs. Ditch the costume changes, if necessary, wear something over something and just take it off onstage. Lose the Ann Landers cliche advice, and interact with the audience on a personal level. He has a wonderful voice, I think showcasing THAT instead of dancers, lasers, smoke, flying monkeys, whatever… would be smarter. At least at this point in time. I don’t think too many people have a problem with his singing, the other stuff comes across as pretentious. (even if it’s meant to camp.)

        • jazz

ITA, deez. I like his voice when I’m in the mood for it. I don’t think I’d ever like his onstage performance style, though.

      • Blue Eyes

I like Adam’s voice most of the time, but the screaming seems gimmicky to me. Why can’t he just sing without screaming. He’s got a great voice already.

For the reviewer to say this:

“Lambert would often venture into timbres somewhere between nails-on-chalkboard and sneaker-on-basketball-court.”

It’s apparant this reviewer is not a fan of the high-pitched screaming or perhaps Adam had an off night. Every concert can’t be perfect.

  • CayKat

It was a harsh review but, it certainly covered much pf how I feel about Adam. The insecurities and not being sure of himself part – right on the money. I sincerely hope, and believe that he’ll get in together on his next album.

    • CayKat

      *of

      *it together

I should really proof these things before I post them

    • naiya

Yeah, the delivery was pretty harsh, but there is definitely a common theme running through the majority of his reviews.

      • tshelly

I agree that the blow could have been softened a little bit, but I also agree with Naiya that the reviewer is picking up what a number of people have noticed already. To me, it comes across as though Adam is trying too hard to make people like him by being the next “it” boy, whereas Kris Allen is just doing what he wants to do and is hoping people like it.

I don’t think it means one guy is better than the next, though everyone is going to have their individual preferences. I simply think it means that Kris already knows and is comfortable with his musical identity, while Adam is still figuring that out to some degree.

Adam obviously has a lot of natural talent, and I am not suggesting he force himself into one career path or another to suit my fancy. I just get the feeling he hasn’t really discovered who he is in the artistic sense. When he does, he’ll be a much more interesting person to watch.

        • MissMyEm

To me, it comes across as though Adam is trying too hard to make people like him by being the next “it” boy…
This is one of the things that has always led me to believe the real reason he never went further in his pre-Idol career.

Disclaimer: I am not Dr. Phil.

        • old bat

IMHO, he knows that he wants to do horrible electro-dance-pop with lasers and glitter and homoeroticism yay, but hasn’t quite managed to figure out a way to make them all come together in a way that many people would perceive as “cool”.

        • Darcy

Not an Adam or Kris fan, but the comparison of Kris and Adam here just seemed a lot of fanwar rehashing. Why does a bad review of Adam necessitate a comparison to what Kris does? Isn’t that what sucks about Glamberts? j/s

          • muzikizmi

Isn’t that the ‘Rue McClanahan’ of monsters? Do the monsters recycle, when no longer needed by the original owner?

          • tshelly

Darcy – Apologies if it seems like I was fanning the flames, Kris was just a ready comparison in this context. Perhaps I should have compared Lambert to other aspiring acts or an AI alum who isn’t such a hot button. Substitute Meaghan Smith outside the AI bubble or Jason Castro from within, for example, and I think the point still stands. Both newer artists trying to establish themselves, but with an identity that rings true.

  • deez

Maybe try out a Kris Allen concert Chris, I think he’s more your speed.

What does that even mean? I’ve seen something along the lines of that statement in several comment sections recently. “Hahaha…nobody ever said Adam was rock. What about Kris? he couldn’t rock out anything except maybe a chair lol.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.”….(stuff like that)

Are Glamberts under the impression that one of Kris’s concerts is nothing but hymns?

    • musicfan

No, they probably think it’s nothing but Kris singing jingles for Chick-Fil-A, AT&T, and other “cheater” corporations.

    • naiya

Methinks the Kris Allen Band is going to sneak up and bite a few people in the ass in the near future. Dudes are kicking it up a notch lately.

      • jazz

I agree, naiya. Maybe that’s the upside of not being proclaimed the Rawk Gawd / Elvis /David Bowie /next coming. People are appreciative when you’re actually good & fun.

      • Paulie

ITA too. My Idol-blogger acquaintance once mentioned that Kris will benefit from the low expectations the public has set for him when he won. Time will tell but I think it’s true, especially when one reads tweets/reports/reviews that convey pleasant surprise.

        • margie

I know we all bitch and moan about how he is the Idol that didn’t actually win in terms of press, but I look at it as a good thing. Most people do not know he even won Idol and that is a good thing. The faster he breaks away from Idol the better. In interviews you can tell he wants to also. I loved hearing Maroon 5 asked him to open for them. That is a great compliment. Artists outside of Idol that are legit do take him seriously and like him. That means more to me than anything. Screw disgruntled Glamberts.

          • mtlfan

yeah, I didn’t know that Maroon 5 ask Kris to open for them. That’s saying a lot about his talent. The same with Keith Urban… In MTV interview today, I learned that they added 6 more shows with K.U. Jim C. said:” he loves you dude!!” Related to this, one thing is thrilling me, i mean, Keith Urban is supposed to write a song for a duet with Kris!! What do you bet that by the end of the summer this song will air? and they will sing it in concert? ok ok maybe I’m off but it’s a cool idea nevertheless!

    • muzikizmi

Kris has three great reviews on his Google news page today. Adam has a bad one. I should feel guilty that this makes me so happy. Somebody remind me in about five years, and I will see if I can work up a good guilt trip. My guess is no, however.

      • jazz

I kinda feel bad for Adam, but then I remember the Glamberts gloating so much over the Bream review & don’t feel so bad….. Adam’s worst review was in the NY Post, though! Way bigger circulation, more respected, etc., etc.

  • Lauren

Haha I totally predicted a negative review from the Post and a positive review from the Examiner. Too bad the Examiner doesn’t matter. The Sun didn’t post anything :(

    http://www.examiner.com/x-4019-Baltimore-Pop-Culture-Examiner~y2010m6d28-Adam-Lambert-Orianthi-and-Allison-Iraheta-concert-was-SPECTACULAR

    • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

Its because the writers for the Examiner are Glamberts. They’re the ones choosing to review his concert. (I hate the Examiner and sites like that, even though I am a “blogger.” I don’t purport to be a news site. I believe in journalism and try to uphold such beliefs when actually reporting or reviewing things, but this is a blog. Citizen journalism sites should not be run like the Examiner and Associated Content, because there are many people on there who are not posting news. And the fact this is classified in Google as such? Ugh.

      Ok. I’ll quit ranting. :)

      • Lauren

LOL, I am well aware that at least a few Glamberts work for the Examiner. Sour is always linking me to their articles.

        It’s ok. Take a deep breath…

        • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

Trust me when I say my feelings are not a Glambert thing. Its more of a journalism thing.

          • w.dark

            I couldn’t agree more.

  • OvenMitt

See, this is what happens when you shut down the mental institutions and let the crazies assimilate into society.

I made some comment in passing on another site about how I was tired of hearing about Adam, and, of course, caught shit for it. I’d better feel excited about constantly having Adam forced down my throat, even if I’m searching for information on other Idols. I guess there’s something wrong with ME, huh? Four years of college down the drain, since apparently I’m not smart enough to “get” the Glambert.

    • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

You’re a close-minded homophobe who knows nothing about music, didn’t you know?

    • Pandora

“Forced down your throat?” You HOMEPHOBE!!!!!!

Of COURSE no one ever used that phrase before, and even if they did it was different then and isn’t relevant now, because everything revolves around the Glittery Hero!

    • OvenMitt

Apparently I am a homophobe, never mind that my best friend was the man-of-honor at my wedding. And he sang a song from Westside Story during the ceremony, too!

But yes, I hate gays. And glitter. But I DO like SOME things forced down my throat……..

    • alicat10025

Guess my college education was worthless, as well as all the years my parents paid for music lessons for me since I don’t get it either. That’s ok – I don’t think I want to get it at this point.

    • Dickory Dock

Forced down your throat, huh? I see your thinly veiled homophobia in that comment and will commence the glitter stick beatdown in 3…2…1

  • Blue Eyes

Why do Idol fans have a need to defend their Idol? It’s like their his mommy and their baby needs defending. This is what turns the Idols into jokes. These over-zealous nutcases are not helping him in the least.

Get over yourselves, you nutty women, it’s just an opinion. If you like him, that’s the only thing that matters.

    • Llamakhan

What’s hilarious to me is that they had to take the time to register to the Washington Post to even write a comment. Then they attack a review that is pretty much accurate in how Adam really is. Constantly criticizing people who do not find Adam as great As Elvis, the Beatles, and Mick Jagger makes them look psycho.

      • FreeDavidCook

        Don’t you mean ‘Mick Jigger’?

  • Pandora

The comments are so full of fail.

One mentioned that the reviewer had disliked Adam on Idol so of course he went into the concert prejudiced against him… but the Post has a TV columnist (Lisa deMoraes) who writes about Idol and she adores Adam.

I also like the commenter who “explains” that there is a theme to the show and that the reviewer should have done research beforehand and then he would have understood. Isn’t a performance supposed to be understandable WITHOUT doing homework first?

    • http://topidolblog.com TopIdol

When you’re a critic, you give your OWN opinion. It is OPINION. That’s why it just boggles my mind how insane these people are, telling this guy he is wrong, he is biased, he is homophobic, questioning the integrity of not only him but the Washington Post (Katharine Graham wouldn’t be rolling in her grave over these nutters, that’s for sure), et al.

When I have seen Adam Lambert perform, I go in with a completely OPEN MIND. No one believes me, of course, but I probably try harder than I do for other artists. I try really, really hard to see the magic, to see why people are so whacked over this guy.

First they spammed the NYT regarding the kissing vs. licking issue (which they not-so-subtly made into an issue of homophobia) and now they’re preparing to burn down the Washington Post. When will these people get a grip?

      • Dickory Dock

Not to go totally OT but Katharine Graham is a personal hero of mine. What a dame she was.

      • FreeDavidCook

Get a grip?? People that sleep in front of a venue in weather that was heat indexed at 107 have no way to even view a grip much less get one. I think this calls for aversion therapy ala Clockwork Orange because the grip comes

        • FreeDavidCook

BEFORE the grip comes. Ugh, this issue just pisses me off so much I lose ability to spell and use correct words.

    • musicfan

If I have to do “homework” to go to a show, forget it. I work all day, my free time is for enjoyment.

And I’d rather have a reviewer go in unbiased, without having paid attention to a lot of what other critics and fans have said. That way you get their honest opinion.

  • jazz

At least there was no indication that this reviewer didn’t go to the concert with an open mind (he hadn’t already decided, for example, that he would like another performer’s future performance better & he hadn’t written previous articles about how AL’s success on Idol was a mistake such as the “respected” mr. bream did….)

    • ross

Also, weren’t there a lot of Adam fans agreeing with Jon Bream in his comments section? They seem to haunt the comments sections of reviews of both idols. (Not picking on Adam fans, here. Just the ones who live to put Kris down.)

I don’t like to see people get negative reviews unless they suck, and Adam doesn’t suck. But this guy had a few perceptive points, like about Adam’s singing style (pop vs. B’way), and it was a much more intelligent review than Bream’s was of Kris. I think the guy was unecessarily nasty in parts of it. He could have gotten the same points across without being snide.

Cool that KAB is covering MGMT!

      • jazz

Yes, but the Kris fans who responded to Bream & pointed out his past negativity, his statement that he already knew he’d like the other performer better, and his failure to acknowledge that Kris was very sick were just being over-sensitive and “butt-hurt.” ha ha

I agree that this was a much more intelligent review (and I also agree that Adam doesn’t suck)!

  • musicfan

Coming out of lurkerdom after months of reading and enjoying this blog. That comments section is unbelievable! As a Cook fan (not a BSC one, not a tard, just one who enjoys his music) I used to cringe seeing these kinds of comments written on reviews and blogs that were the least bit critical of Cook. I hope that for the second album, his fans will have gained some perspective and see that it isn’t necessary to fight a war with anyone who disagrees with their opinion.

I’m not sure the Glamberts will ever realize that they don’t help Adam by “defending” him and insulting reviewers and bloggers. All they do is make themselves – and Adam by extension – look bad. A review is an opinion. Not everyone feels the same way about the same thing. Diversity is the spice of life, people. Every artist has critics. Sometimes they even have some valid points if you stop and think clearly about them.

I liked Adam on the show. I voted for him. I think he has a beautiful voice, and he seems like a genuinely nice guy. I didn’t care for most of the music on his album – too dance/pop for me. I wouldn’t go to one of his concerts, because I don’t care for all the theatrics. When I go to a concert, I go for the music. But that’s just me, and Adam seems to be doing fine. He doesn’t need to have everyone falling all over themselves praisin him for him to be successful. Which is what his fans should be wishing for him – success.

    • songkat7

      Agreed & welcome!

  • auntieaimee

“Lambert would often venture into timbres somewhere between nails-on-chalkboard and sneaker-on-basketball-court.”

    Eeek! How descriptive. Heh heh.

    • jazz

      Wow…that part is pretty harsh.

      • old bat

I know, right? Just reading the words made me flinch hearing the sounds in my head.

  • rollingmyeyes

I just watched MGMT’s “Electric Feel” video for the first time and thought, “This is what Adam was shooting for with the ‘If I Had You’ video.” More importantly, I’m excited to hear Kris and his band’s version of this!

    • CayKat

I am so excited about that cover! Ages ago, Kris mentioned that he loved that song and since then, I have been waiting for him to bust it out.

Also, Allison could not be any cooler if she tried. WHY ISN’T THIS GIRL A MEGASTAR YET?

  • alicat10025

For people who claim to be about love and diversity and rspect the Glambert responses on that article were ridiculous. The man is entitle to have his own opinion but the way they were going on and on you’d never know it. The one comparing him to Elvis, Madonna, Bowie, etc. has me laughing at the stupidity in it – Adam is not on the same level as any of the people mentioned, not even Gaga who was the only 100% current even brought forth in that comment.

And then there’s the comment telling him to go to a Kris concert – and I was thinking, why are they bringing him up again in an article about Adam Lambert? For people, who claim to dislike/hate him that much they sure do have a funny way of showing it by constantly bringing him up out of context.

  • Pandora

Everyone must be assimilated! The cult must be all-encompassing!

Note that some of the comments alluded to homophobia without explicitly mentioning it… because of course that would be the only reason for someone to dislike the Glittery One’s performance.

  • Salleyanne

Unbelievable some of the comments on that Washington Post article. Sad that they claim AL is about love and diversity, then they continue to bash anyone that doesn’t follow their logic.
