American Idol Top 8 Guys POSSIBLE SPOILERS
From Idol 360 (please oh please will someone give me spoilers this year so I could have at least one moment in the sun?):
Lee – Fireflies by Owl City
Alex -
Tim – Hallelujah
Andrew – Genie In A Bottle
Casey – A song by Keith Urban
Aaron – A song by Rascal Flatts
Todrick – Somebody To Love by Queen
Michael – A song by Maxwell
I hope these are true because they seem right on. Andrew is trying to recapture his Straight Up magic by picking a gay male/tween girl circa 1998 anthem to “make his own.” Tim Urban will basterdize Leonard Cohen AND Jeff Buckley. Todrick Hall will shit on Freddie Mercury’s grave. Lee will do another tired ‘n’ terrible pop-rock-that-thinks-its-alternative ditty. Casey and Aaron will do what they usually do. Michael Lynche does a “black guy” song for the second week in a row, and…
WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT ALEX LAMBERT WILL SING. Funny, he’s the only one I cared about.
ETA: Apparently, Alex Lambert will be doing Ray LaMontagne’s Trouble. Making him my [EVEN MORE SO] most-favorite male contestant of the season.

Some spoilers here from tonight’s show.
This Woman’s Work was in the movie “She’s Having a Baby”. Beautiful, beautiful song and Maxwell, I must admit, did a great job with it. After the song was used on SYTYCD, Maxwell’s version was pretty high on I-tunes for a time. I love the original version, but Maxwell and Michael made it work — the song is haunting and gorgeous on so many levels. (I’m not sure how I feel about Kara crying, though. I think she might be wanting a bambino or two.)
I don’t have much to say about the guys. They pretty much bore me and I skipped over Tim’s Hallelujah. I respect Leonard Cohen’s version namely because the man wrote the song and the lyrics are just flat-out glorious and complex. I’ve heard Cale’s version, as well as, kd lang’s, but Buckley’s will always be the stand-out for me. Just so visceral. Kris Allen’s I Need To Know hits me hard like that as well. Gut-wrenching stuff.
I mainly came here to share this one thing because I found it to be a complete mindfuck. Simon had the audacity to call TODRICK a BROADWAY SINGER after singing a Queen song, and not once said that to ADAM LAMBERT, Theater Boy, during his entire TOP 13 stint blows my mind. Simon Cowell still can’t accept the fact that Kris Allen won while he’s staring at and listening to Kris Allen wannabes with their parade of acoustic guitars and reinvention of songs night after night, both male and female. He’s just messing with us now. All Simon cares about is getting his way — not Adam, not Kris, not any of these contestants. If they lose, it’s their fault, not his, as he clearly stated to Crystal. If America doesn’t vote her the winner, it lands in her lap.
These contestants have had free rein with their song choices. IIRC, David Cook’s year they were all ready having to choose from sucky songs even before top 12. Brooke and Cook both did the Turtle’s Happy Together. That to me is slim pickings.
This year is odd on so many levels. Last year pissed me off, this year confuses me.
If Kris Allen is going to perform more random covers in upcoming shows, I would love to hear him take on Jeff Buckley’s Last Goodbye.
I agree. The notes Buckley hits, the sound itself, tells his story
without the need for words. Kicks you hard, like a punch to the
gut. I felt it when I listened to Kris’s I Need To Know and I
felt again with Kris’s Let It Be. (Along with Falling Slowly,
To Make You Feel My Love) I don’t need it to perfect or pretty,
just need it to be real.
I think there is something wrong with my ears. There are just certain pitches or sounds that are like fingers on a chalkboard to me. Alex’s voice this week made me cringe. Lee was boring again. His singing didn’t annoy me but it didn’t do anything for me either. I kind of liked Big Mike’s performance. He’s cheezy and over the top but it sort of works for him.
I kept going through the list of guys in my head trying to remember what I liked or disliked about their performances. It took me about five times of mentally reviewing their songs to remember to add Tim to the list. Aaron and Casey blah more boring performances.
Todrick and Andrew were the two worst of the night for me. Todrick crapped all over a song I’ve loved for decades. Andrew made me hate even more a song I’ve always hated.
Todrick is singing 7th, which means he’s been given a gift of a very cushy spot. Somebody behind the scenes wants the Toad to hang around. Arrgggh. I want him O-U-T. And it’s like Katie last night, where I am tempted to vote for everybody else (except Tim. I won’t go that low) just so Todrick will get the boot.
Does anyone else think that Simon gave Tim nice comments in the hopes his irate fans will be complacent?
Nah, me, either.
I thought his “Hallelujah” was awful, though. I hope all the Rastro fans are throwing hissies that somebody else dared to do their boy’s (perceived) song and it’s all backlash, baby.
I’m watching it a bit behind so Kara just said “you peaked orally” while busing Andrew Garcia. Tim was OK. He almost sounded like he understands what he is singing about. You know like words. Like he wasn’t just making strange noises but telling something. It was strange. I think VFTW should switch to Aaron. I haven’t listened to him yet but man, he can’t sing. (Casey is pretending to sing now, wow, I hate being negative so …)
Todrick totally tried to come out and be all Adam Lambert. Hee. Good luck with that! Maybe he should’ve gone with “Black Boys” from Hair if he wanted to hit the Glambert Frau population where they live.
I’m not voting tonight. None of these guys moved me, except in a negative way. I thought Casey and Andrew were better than they gave them credit for but still pretty meh. Aaron was awful. Painful. Alex was okay but nothing special. Ditto Lee. Michael did nothing for me and I even rewound to see if I was crazy and no… Did nothing for me. I can’t remember who that leaves.
Oh, wait. Tim and his wimpy Hallelujah. Yikes.
Y’know, when frickin’ Fireflies is my favorite performance of the night, you know you got trouble. I HAAAATE that song. But now that I said “Trouble,” maybe Alex was better. I dunno. I didn’t really get much out of either of them. I guess I’ll go with Alex for picking a not-so-horrifyingly-bad song.
1. Alex C
2. Lee C-
3. Casey C-
4. Andrew C-
5. Michael C-
6. Todrick D
7. Tim F
8. Aaron F
Michael was amazing. That is how one is supposed to sing. Alex managed to get on my nerves even more by enunciating all his word while singing nasally.
AI is just airing where I am, but I notice Tim Urban is trending on Twitter. So, I guess his fans aren’t too complacent.
Alex just manages to pick songs that are ridiculously suitable for his voice. Boy got SKILLZ!
Bets on Simon finding it boring? Anyone…??
Oh, and I bet that Alex was inspired to choose this song based on this commercial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5G7bGBUlx2M
I fucking want that puppy so bad.
I love that commercial.
Come on. It was funny while it lasted. But why oh why does he roll his r’s? Why? Who does that while singing?
I know Tim is going to ruin “Hallelujah” but I pray to the AI Gods everyone seems to have this year that he does not ruin my Jeff Buckley song.
Hallelujah is a Leonard Cohen song. And a John Cale cover before Buckley did it.
Sorry, my pretentious music fan side comes out when this stuff comes up. I agree that Buckley’s cover was good, but it isn’t his song.
I said Leonard Cohen!
I don’t know if I’ve ever heard the Cale version. Always have associated it with Cohen.
Yes, you did say Cohen, but you also said Maxwell. How do you not know Kate Bush?
If you’ve seen Shrek, you’ve heard the John Cale version. It breaks my heart that people thought that was Buckley. John Cale is a legend.
Margie,
Check these out…
Cohen
Bonus Cohen because I saw him on this tour.

Cale
Ohhhh, lol, I heard Cale, I thought “Kris’s fluffer”.
Rufus Wainwright’s version (Also from Shrek!…2?) is far and away my favorite version of “Hallelujah”.
Sorry I only know Buckley’s erinnthred. Please forgive me
I love that the person didn’t know Trouble was Ray Lamontange. Or is Lou M’s another song? I really need to get on this rehearsal thing. At least I’ll know most of the music. But just my luck, I’d end up going country night.
Agreed about Alex’s music taste. He’s really great.
Am I the only one disturbed that people think This Woman’s Work is a Maxwell song? Please. I love the cover, but that is Kate HBinMFC Bush’s song.
TopIdol, are you seriously tarding on Alex -I carefully enunciate all my words while I am singing- Lambert? Really? I can imagine how he’ll sing it:
trrrrrroubbbiiillll (hard r & l) x5
bean dog innnggg (both very hard g’s) my sowul sinsss thah dayyyy (hard d) I waz (hard s) borrrrn (carefully enunciated r)
Wor (rrrrrr) riiiiiii x6
etc.
Lee is doing ‘Fireflies’? I didn’t think he was that lame.
After a Hinder cover? Fireflies is a step up. Granted, not a big step.
When will that poor man’s Postal Service go away? Ugh
Lee is awful. He sings all up his nose.
yeah Fireflies glad I switched to Alex last week. I really thought I was going to like Lee but not so much. bet Andrew kills with Genie. Don’t like Alex going so early but oh well. I need Tim andtodrick to go home. Had to come here because i thought I can’t be the only one who thinks Lee was horrible.
I hate Fireflies. First Lips of Angel and now this? I don’t think Lee wants me to root for him.
I know. Two weeks in a row he picks ridiculously bad songs. I have a hard enough time listening to him because he’s usually a bit off key, but off key AND singing a bad song = me diving for the mute button on my remote.
He could have been the one. He could have been a contender. But the guy just has really bad taste in music.
I’m so disappointed. I wanted to really like Lee. He has that gritty voice I usually love. But he has no imagination, creativity and he hasn’t learned how to play the Idol game. He just isn’t interesting.
Todrick at least is interesting even if it’s in a train wreck sort of way.
Tim, NOOOOOO please don’t do it. Just don’t!
Lee is picking the worst songs.
According to VFTW (via Joe’s Place), Alex is singing “Trouble” by Ray LaMontagne
http://www.votefortheworst.com/
I think I could like Alex for just his song choices alone. I think this means the TPTB like him well enough for now since they are letting these songs through. Alex’s type of voice should sound great on this and it fits his vibe.
