Likely yet another American Idol fan scam

A few weeks ago, Adam Lambert fans began raising money to send Isabel Paquette, an 89-year-old Wisconsin woman, to Lambert’s upcoming show at the Fantasy Springs Casino. First off, this has looked shady from the get-go. The ring leader is someone purporting to be a gay Canadian Adam Lambert devotee named SweetSexySean. Rather recently, he began a blog and opened a Twitter account. Immediately, he ran a Q&A with Isabel about her love for Adam Lambert…along with a call to action urging his fellow Lambert fans to send Isabel and her daughter Joy to Indio, CA for the show. As of right now, Isabel is on her way to California. She’s even been talking to local press about the generosity of Lambert fans, including the Green Bay Gazette. But obviously, SweetSexySean needs more money to help give Isabel the trip of a lifetime.

In addition to travel expenses and hotel accomodations, Isabel suddenly needed oxygen tanks. And for the past week or so, SweetSexySean and someone called Pflagmom have been requesting this last $400 to cover these costs. Pflagmom likes to state how real she is because she’s actually giving out her real name — the very real sounding Istrea Ann. First off, let’s look at SweetSexySean, who claims his name is the very generic Sean Patrick. He is also 38-years-old. This is the photo attached to his blog and Twitter account.

Lately, SweetSexySean has taken to Tweeting about the Olympics, particularly Johnny Weir. He’s is so adept at being gay. I mean, I know soooo many 38-year-old gay men who write long-winded fanwank about Adam Lambert and his guitarist via LiveJournal (another recently opened account) and Tweet things like this

In my next life I want @JohnnyGWeir MOM / @adamlambert DAD as MY PARENTS. I will then have a fab childhood and growup to be SUPERGLITTERMAN!

Uh…okay. Anyway, Pflagmom/Istrea Ann recently posted another call to action for THE LAST $400 via Adam Official. People have posted saying they donated $10, $25…how could they still be waiting on THE LAST $400 for this long? Pflagmom is obviously the ideal person to be entrusted with the collection of funds, as she explains the donation process with such ease, obviously accounting for any concerns fans may have regarding where their money is going.

I am Istrea Ann. I am over the Trust Fund for Isabel. It had to be put in a real person’s name (me) and Sean trusted me to do that. I was very honored to do so and have acounted of every penny donated and spent that Sean will be putting out once this is completed. Sean did not want to put the PayPal account in his name for many reasons. One being that he is in Canada and money would have been lost in the exchange rate and two he felt more then one person needed to be involved in this for ethics reasons and for when questions came up. Sean is a very smart man and I very much admire him. Sharon, I can not find your other thread but please read the OP up top and you will see how to donate. You are so kind and giving and this whole experience has been amazing! THANK YOU!

How convenient. Sean is in Canada. They needed another person involved as a matter of ethics. And about the oxygen/wheelchair rental… First off, at airports and any hotel/casino, there is NEVER any fee for wheelchair rental. Who the hell charges for such a thing in the first place? But there is no reason to believe the Fantasy Springs Casino would not provide wheelchairs to their mobility-impaired guests. When my grandmother was dying, all she wanted to do was play the slot machines at Harrah’s in St. Louis. And yes, she had a wheelchair to use whenever necessary. Quite often, my aunt would end up falling asleep in it around 4am. It is also interesting that the hotel AND wheelchair would need to be paid for when Fantasy Springs offered Isabel and her daughter free accomodations after hearing about her. A fan offered Paquette and her daughter free tickets to the show, but the pair couldn’t afford airfare. A blogger caught wind of the cause and posted the video, urging fans to send her to the concert. Within 24 hours, the money was raised and Fantasy Springs offered them a free stay. In all actuality, only $1000 would need to be raised at this point, basically just the cost of airfare from Wisconsin to California for both Isabel and her daughter. Oh, and about the oxygen tank. According to Isabel’s daughter:

“They set her up with an oxygen tank in her wheelchair just in case she needs it,” said daughter Joy Hinterberg, who is traveling with her mom.

Is she talking about the fans again? And how can request oxygen for someone without being a licensed healthcare provider? As a VFTW reader pointed out:

This whole thing is such complete BS. Medicare covers the cost of wheelchairs and oxygen equipment. The FAA does allow passengers to fly with their own chairs and airlines provide o2 on flights if necessary at a cost of about fifty dollars. Arrangements can be made through Isabel’s current o2 provider to have the needed equipment waiting for her when she gets to CA. There is no way that Sean or anyone else can set up oxygen rental for her. The o2 provider needs to have her prescriptions and medicare and or medicaid info.

If you scan through the original blog post, you can see numerous individuals pledging $100, or even the use of airline miles. So why do Pflagmom and SweetSexySean still need $400? Oh yes. Because people promised money and did not come through. It’s gotten so bad, SweetSexySean can barely sleep at night! Even today, Pflagmom is posting to Adam Official on his behalf

Come on. Something about this just ain’t right. Hopefully, Isabel will be on her way to California, but will all the money go with her? What happens if those plane tickets are suddenly canceled? Basically, all of this just seems like yet another scam. The fact they are still requesting money for something which has technically been paid for several times over? Requesting money for things likely supplied by both the airport and casino? And is someone named Kweenjeane on the take?

I’ve been tweeting with sweetsexysean. Yes, as Pflagmom said, we need the $400. I need to clarify if the w.c. and O2 will be covered by that, but being a med. social worker who has set up travel O2, I can tell you that it is insanely expensive. It’s a very special type of O2 that the FFA requires. I’m hoping they are aware of that, but I’m not so sure….folks are usually unaware and just assume they can drag a regular tank on board. SO…..we may need more than $400. I’m waiting to see if sean responds re: approaching the equipment co’s to donate the 02. I’d be happy to work on that. W.C. doesn’t concern me. Cheap, even donated ones avail. everywhere. What can we do? Need ideas ppl.

If you have any information on SweetSexySean or Pflagmom, please let me know. None of this adds up, and while we can say people are stupid for sending their money to those they only know via an online message board, do we really enjoy watching people get scammed?

So I have emailed TopIdol and told her how sorry I am and I am here to admit that yes, I did lie. I thought it was all in fun. I didn’t really think any of this was real. I find it unheard of that an employee of http://www.dhs.gov would do this and when I overheard Shelly talking about this today at work, it made me sick. This is NOT what the US Department of Homeland Security is about nor is it what we do.

Let me clear a few things up.

2. Sean is a Man and in no way at DHS would we even be able to look up any info on a sex reassignment/change. I will say however, his birth certificate does list him as a MALE. The picture you have posted in this blog is the same person pictured on his passport.

3. Shelly has been reported and I’m sorry but I have also had to report this website due to it being in violation of DHS policies since Shelly not only posted here personal information, she also committed a crime and that is now linked to this website.

If it’s the former – get outside, have a life, and quit stressing out over the (apparently accurate) accusations that a complete stranger to you is less than honest in their intentions.

If it’s the latter – ease up and step away from the computer before one of those Krispy Kremes dislodges from your arteries and gives you a massive stroke.

Whether this is all a scam (likely), or an actual misguided fan who didn’t know any better trying to do good (pretty far-fetched) remains to be seen. But there’s more than enough evidence, by way of sweetsexysean’s own comments and posts, to suggest the former. And rather than be accountable to the donors (yes, THEY were the ones who first started doubting btw) he’s decided to disappear in a blaze of glory, insulting you and your kind on his way out the door.

If you’re going to toss threats around and try to sound all holier-than-thou, there are some basic principles you should know:

1. Know what you’re talking about. You don’t.
2. See #1 – and learn the difference between libel and slander (duh) and what actually constitutes both. Also, paragraphs, spelling and grammar are your friends if you’re trying to prove yourself better than others.
3. Most people grow out of the whole “liar liar pants on fire” mentality (and the “just you wait, I’ll be proved right so hahahaha” thought process) around age 10. I think you’ve missed a few developmental milestones along the way. This would be a good discussion point with your current or future therapist.

All this proves is just how shady the whole situation is. How anyone can say that this person being a fake proves the other people aren’t is beyond me. No one has met Sean. No one met Shelly either. Apparently no one has talked to Sean on the phone either.

I can’t wait to see how this pans out. I’m sure that Joy and Isabel will try to go on the trip at this point. No chance we’ll ever know how much “Sean” really raised. I love watching the saga, though.

However, the mystery as to who “Sean” really is has still not been solved. There is still no one who can say they met him or spoke on the phone with him.

I saw a longer post, with all kinds of dire accusations and threats about Homeland Security and the person who said that “Sean” (if there really is a “Sean”) was a post-op tranny. If Homeland Security really thinks it’s a wise use of their time to be investigating internet posts about American Idol contestants, then I think I need to be contacting my own congresspersons.

Honestly, I don’t believe in “Sean,” “Jake,” the first supposed HSE employee OR the second one. I think they may all be the same person. I have no reason to think that except that none of what any of them have said or have said they’ve done seems to accord with my view of reality.

For all of you angry Sean’s supporters. Isabel flying to Palm Springs and having the time of her life at the concert proves nothing. It’s not a valid reason to say “Told ya so”. It does not prove that just enough money was raised to cover the trip. Asking questions before making a donation is not invasive or nasty. It’s smart! I do think Joy is partly to blame for this whole mess. She should have spoken up and said “Enough, I will cover food and taxis, medicare will cover the oxygen and wheelchair”. She did mention in a comment here that she had told Sean she had money for incidentals but he said “No the fans will pay for them”.

I really do hope Isabel has a wonderful time and that her dreams come true. I’ve got nothing against her or even against Joy for traveling with her mother. In fact I think she absolutely should be with her mom to keep her healthy and safe. My only problem with her is that she did not insist that Sean stop collecting once the flight, hotel stay and concert tickets were taken care of.

As far as Sean goes, please stop being angry for a minute and think logically. When people first started questioning this, instead of responding in a calm rational manner, he along with Jake and pflagmom went into hyper defensive mode and got nasty. They threatened donors with public humiliation should they dare to become suspicious and want their money back. For the person who supposedly dug up passport and medical information about Sean, whether any of it is true or not, that is a serious abuse of power. There is no legal investigation into this donation project, so in the course of you doing your job, you had no legal authority to look up anything on anyone involved in any capacity. I am thoroughly disgusted and nauseated at the fact that there are people like you in the world.

The tickets were gifted by me via Sean exactly 3 weeks ago. Maybe things could have been set up with a bit more transparency given more time, but in that 3 weeks, enough needed to be raised in order to get plane tickets at a reasonable fare, as well as all the other arrangements. Sean did arrange to have the PayPal donations through a 3rd party, pflagmom, so his intentions were in the right place. I seem to remember him having an estimate of how much would be needed, and noting that small donations might get us there. I believe his intentions have always been to have a full accounting to the DONORS after the event. And from the beginning, I belive any excess funds have always been intended to go to donorschoose.org. Maybe the donation drive should not have been on Adam’s official site, but blame the moderator for not catching it. It was also posted at other sites, I believe. In retrospect, he and the others who have pulled together this amazing effort for Isabel to attend Adam’s concert may have made some misteps along the way, but entirely due to the immense enthusiasm to bring this all together in time.

From that point on, a donation drive was set up via PayPal, and again, maybe all that could have been thought through a bit better, but KUDOS TO SEAN for actually making all this happen. In the meantime, since she too is an Adam fan, perhaps she got a bit overenthusiastic in her twitters. So what??? She’ll be attending to escort her mother, but why shouldn’t she get to enjoy the show? It’s not like she said, well thanks for the tickets, but I’ll leave mom home!

Joy, Isabel, and Isabel’s doctors are the only people who would know IF Isabel should travel, and what accommodations for her health would be needed. Since all this needed to be arranged in such a short period of time, perhaps the drive for the addition funds for oxygen/wheelchair was not needed, but perhaps being from Canada, Sean did not know how to work the Medicare situation and just wanted it to be DONE. I do not know about how all that transpired, but just as the negative posters here are so quick to jump to nastiest conclusions and on AO even attempt to diagnose and prescribe solutions, perhaps maybe, just maybe there might have been some room for a reasonable explanation. But NO, you think you know it all, don’t you.

Finally, about Sean’s sexuality — JUST AS ADAM’S SEXUALITY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS MUSIC, SEAN’S SEXUALITY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY OF THIS. To bring it into the discussion at all, with the disgusting additional allegations, is the very definition of homophobia.

This will all be coming together later this week, with a joyous event for Isabel seeing Adam in concert at Fantasy Springs. I will be meeting Isabel and Joy in order to give them their tickets, and I hope they and the rest of the positive, generous fans attending the concert have a blast.

I finally got through all the comments here. I see that Joy did address the medicare issue. So according to Sean’s lovely homemade spread sheet $800 was being sent to Isabel and Joy for incidentals. With medicare now covering the wheelchair and oxygen that means that they get 1,250 to spend on food, tips and taxis in three days? Oh and WTH is with that $150 deposit to the hotel? Hotel deposits are simply a hold on the credit card used to book the room. The hold is released when the final bill is submitted to the credit card company. So that is not an actual expense for this trip. So that brings it to 1,450 extra that has been collected from fans if we allow for flight, hotel stay, trip insurance and even the $100 for the flowers and fruit being delivered to the room.

Sorry Joy – according to Sean’s accounting, the extra night has already been paid for in the funds that were raised. That now leaves you with $900+ for spending money (taxis, meals, souveniers).

Sounds like you are going to have a bang up weekend.

Shame, though, that the generous fans who contributed to this project were almost browbeaten about the extra $400 for the oxygen tank when many knew and pointed out to you that this would be covered by Medicare and addressed this directly to YOU to have it unanswered. Only after this fact was pointed out by several members on AO and other questions asked did Sean have his people post on AO that all contributions could stop as everything had been met. Even more shameful is that from the start, contributors were told that any excess funds would be sent to Adam’s APPROVED charity called Donors Choose.

It is one thing to be overwhelmed by the generosity of strangers. It is totally another to put blinders on and not accepted any personal responsibility.

(Sorry for the double post guys, but this got buried and I would really like to see Joy answer it.)

I would have thought possibly that she’s been scammed too, and that far more money was raised than she was told (has she even been told? Joy, I see a lot of non answers. If your mother has medicare coverage/insurance, why not come forward publicly on the forums or twitter and say “The medical equipment necessary for the trip will be covered by insurance. So please do not donate any more of your hard earned money”. I believe I read in one of your posts that you told Sean that you would pay for meals and other extras like tips, taxis etc. Why let him tell you “NO the fans will pay for those things”? By refusing to take any control, you are scamming generous, kind fans. Because you did not step up and announce that the funds for medical equipment and incidentals were not needed, people assumed that you had no money of your own or insurance to cover them.

While it’s true that you were not doing the nagging or begging, you did nothing to prevent Sean from asking for donations that were not necessary. Have you seen any proof that only 2,200 has been collected? Have you asked for a detailed accounting or access to the paypal account so that you could verify the amount donated? You must be in contact with Sean to have set up the oxygen for the trip, the medical clearance to fly etc. During your conversations with him did you ask about the donations and how the money would be handled?

Doesn’t the whole “We don’t want to announce the total raised because we want to surprise Isabel” thing raise a red flag for you? You have stated several times that your mother is not online. So there would be no risk of ruining her surprises. It’s all very suspicious and sounds like bs excuses by Sean. The extra day at the hotel couldn’t possibly have been a surprise for you. You must have known you were staying for that extra day from the return date on your airline tix.

I guess my question to you is, why? Why did you allow Sean to continue to beg and guilt people into donating more money when you had the resources to cover those extra things yourself?

Well, it would be if it all weren’t so sad. Best case scenario: All the people are who they say they are, and they tried to do something nice without thinking it through. Because if they had spent one minute to think it through… Why would a gay guy in Vancouver (Washington *or* BC) start raising funds for a lady in Wisconsin all on his own? Why wouldn’t he contact the daughter or her local congressman or senior center or radio or TV station or somebody in Wisconsin to set up a bank account and start having fish boils and pancake breakfasts to raise the funds for this sweet old member of their community to pay her way to California, just like they would for somebody sick whose family needed the money? How many times have you seen those kinds of appeals where you live? Sweet Elderly Lady Who Wants to Meet Adam Lambert would’ve been a natural. Oprah woulda been all over that and set up a meeting on her show. In Chicago. A hell of a lot closer than going to California. Or sent Adam to surprise Isabel at her door with a bouquet of flowers. Way less stressful for Isabel. (My 85-year-old dad who needed oxygen and a wheelchair stopped traveling by plane at 84 because it was too stressful. And, btw, he always got door-to-door wheelchair service at airports and casinos without paying a dime. Just notified the airline he was flying on and they had the wheelchair waiting for him at the door of whatever transport he took to the airport. The casino was the same way. Dunno about the oxygen because I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t let him take his own oxygen on airplanes and in fact, told him if he needed oxygen all the time he shouldn’t be flying.) In general, it seems to me very poor planning to think that dragging an 89-year-old woman on and off planes on a transcontinental odyssey to a (probably smoky) casino to hear loud music — IF shes makes it — in a timezone where the concert will start at 7 or 8, but it will feel like 9 or 10 to her, with jet lag and air pollution and dryness issues to boot, which will mean her breathing problems will be terrible and she will probably have a sinus headache to end all sinus headaches. Yes, I have been to Palm Springs, why do you ask?

Okay, so that ^^ — poor judgment and not thinking it through AT ALL — is the best case scenario.

Worst case scenario? It’s a scam to score some bucks off delusional fans’ generosity, “Sean” and “Jake” don’t exist, there are no such airline tickets or any such confirmation code, all the money went straight into “Sean’s” pocket, and people will weep and moan and gnash their hooves, but in a few months time, it will all be forgotten as some other AdamScam will have diverted the Adam fans’ attention.

I have a feeling the truth is probably somewhere between those two scenarious. But ya never know. Sucker born every minute and all that. Remember, PT Barnum was from Wisconsin!

Isn’t the original campaign just for plane tickets? Then they(?) asked a bit more for oxygen and wheelchair rental. Where the heck did the pocket money, extra day, flowers etc come from? Who donated money for those?

I don’t know, I was thinking there is no way to prove the scam as long as they bought the plane tickets. But this is internet scam and they(?) admitted on the internet that they misused the donations. So I don’t know.

They never admitted misusing anything though. People naively gave money without any agreement on a true up of the pot except that “overages” would go to Donors Choose. Then when seanjake & co. started spamming for more, more, more, people woke up and realized there was no public accounting and said whoa…why more how much did you collect so far and for what…etc.

I still can’t believe that anyone would Paypal cash to a seanjakeinc blind account. Then they all just accept the stupid “bucket” accounting.

I presumed there were thousands given too, but maybe not. The amount may be relatively correct since seanjakeinc really only had a limited number of fans and I think the ones who are the most vocal don’t really sound like the most educated and likely to be of means. Ahhh yeah. Well, alot of scammers and criminals get caught when they get too greedy, right? So I guess there was an element of wanting more. And I think allegedly the mother was the one who said she was all set to a reporter or something then the daughter clarified well not really since she can’t take her ox. I had a cashier in my store one time get scammed by a gypsy when he bought a pack of tomato SEEDS for $.50 (fifty cents). I had a rule “no making change for anyone” but she made change anyway and he got $50.00 from her in the shell game. Idiot. It was fascinating though watching the transaction on the security tapes.

And just like this story, these type people engage you…stare you in the eye the whole time with a big smile on their faces while doing the scam.

Another time I noticed a cashier at my local convenience store not ring up my purchase so I told the store manager, my shopping center fellow business owner…so he had corporate do a drop in audit when the guy was working. They found a box under the register with $800.00 in it that he was stashing from not ringing up. jfc. They gave me free food for a month as a secret shopper reward ha ha.

I don’t know if there is a scam or not. Isabel and Joy are real people. Isabel has been interviewed by her local press, and she is, indeed, flying from the Midwest to the concert. I don’t know who Sean and the others are, and I don’t know how much people really donated. All the expenses on that list seem normal, however, except for the oxygen tank situation. However, setting up a scam this complicated for $450 seems a bit far fetched.

It’s possible that Sean and others collected $10,000 from generous fans who wanted to do a good deed for this old lady, spent the $2,100 as they said, and kept the rest. In this recession, however, I doubt that much more than $2,100 was collected. I hang around on various Adam sites, and, as far as I know, the only fan site really involved was AO.

There’s nothing wrong with attacking Sean, but attacking the daughter or the old lady is unnecessary. They’re real; they’re going to be involved in a documentable activity. There’s no need to describe the daughter as a “grifter” with no real evidence.

One sign of a scam would be if the old lady got too ill and was unable to fly before the concert. In that case, Sean would need to return the money.

Joy, while I personally understand you and your mother are very happy to be going to this concert, and you haven’t gone yet, the issues simply haven’t been answered. Not by a long shot. Many of us have seen this kind of thing before, and “Sean’s” (less convinced than ever that he is who he says he is) list does nothing but create more questions.

To start:

- If there are a lot of people who posted that they made smaller donations of $25 or $30, why are the donations listed in “blocks?”

-How can we, or the people who gave, confirm these “blocks” as legitimate? He’s just posting random numbers that only kind of add up, not opening up the PayPal account to show the actual donations with notes on what was taken out and when. Many here have pointed out that this is a common practice in charitable giving. You don’t find this suspicious?

-How do we really know he didn’t get more money? There is nothing to confirm his “answers” beyond his own text. Why aren’t you more concerned about this? You seem to just take everything at face value. Correct me if I’m wrong, but you’ve never met any of these people in person, and had not communicated with them on the internet until a month or so ago?

-People have pointed out his expense listed for the O2 and wheelchair don’t add up. Medicare/ Medicaid should cover that 100%. The paperwork filing excuse doesn’t add up. There are people who’ve posted who have experience with this, and that doesn’t seem to be an issue. Can you explain why her Medicare/ Medicaid doesn’t cover this? Why it costs so much, given that several people say it shouldn’t cost that much?

-Why would Sean or anyone taking charitable donations become angry and threatening to someone who supposedly just confirmed they are real? Maybe because they know that if someone looks any deeper they’ll discover that they aren’t real?

-If your mother doesn’t get online, what was the issue about her finding out “surprises?” Especially since the people paying for your trip may want to know what their money is going towards. Most reputable charities are very forward about where the money goes. Why should this be any different? Again, you don’t find this suspicious?

-You do realize that unless you and/ Sean or Istrella filed the proper paperwork with the IRS, that you and your mother will have to pay taxes on this gift? It could end up hurting you a lot more in the end. Charity is very serious business, and it seems like you got involved without doing any prior research, or concerning yourself with the implications. Do you understand why some people wonder if you are treating this situation responsibly?

-Many people here and on other boards have talked about how difficult it is for the elderly who have breathing issues to fly at all. Much less with layovers and such. There is a real possibility that this could be life threatening to your mother. Have you thought of what you will do if your mother has to be hospitalized, or God forbid, worse? This is very real, and it seems as though it’s more of a certainty than even I realized.

I’m sure others have questions too. It seems like a small amount of information is being proffered as the answer to everything, and it just doesn’t work that way. People have told you all what is considered “transparency” in charitable giving. Since, in the end, it all comes down to you taking the donations for your mother, don’t you think you have some responsibility in this to find out some answers for those people who only wanted to help you and your mother?

And, no, worrying about handling the ‘big scary money’ as you put it, was not a factor, I didn’t ask the fans for anything, they started this all, and I didn’t feel it was my place to ask how much was going to be ‘gifted’ to us…do you ever ask someone what their going to ‘gift’ to you? The wheelchair seats are usually not right up in the front. People think if they fake being in a wheelchair they will get better seats, but they’re usually in the back where there is space for a special aisle or extra space next to a regular seat (or even a folding seat in some theaters and arenas) for the person accompanying them. They have to be in a place you can get to without stairs, obviously, and that’s more difficult than you would think in a lot of theaters and arenas.

FYI To those fans concerned about the medical equipment expense: Just so you all know, I couldn’t call any businesses yesterday, Sunday, so I started making phone calls today. I got my moms’ card ID # from her, and started calling about coverage for the wheelchair & oxygen. I called the place where she gets that equipment in our area, and they told me they have a place in California. It’s alittle over an hour away from Indio, but they do deliver. I called the wheelchair place that was already set up for her, and cancelled. Now we not only don’t have to pick up the equipment on the way to the hotel from the airport, but it is free of charge because she’s been using this affiliated company here for years, affiliated with one in Riverside, CA. Now, for the $400 that you’ve asked me about, THAT I know nothing about, I was just told that it went towards my Moms’ wheelchair & oxygen expenses, and they wanted to give us money for taxis, tips, dinners, Adam stuff, etc. I did not, I repeat again, ask for any money or help for the trip. Because the flight out Sunday morning was so early, we didn’t want to press my Mom…at her age, and after being tired from the concert the night before…we took the flight going out on Monday, it was somewhat cheaper anyway…which, I believe, that difference paid for the hotel room on Sunday night. It can explode. There is special oxygen safe for airtravel. Getting her PRESCRIBED AND PAID BY MEDICARE oxygen should be no problem when she gets there as I’m sure there are many services. And yes, wheelchairs are usually complimentary. I think this all is just a lie and another red flag. Notice how Joy never has addressed this (besides so many other things)? It would clear her name if she’d just answer these questions truthfully. I think she isn’t because she can’t.

Joy – according to Sean’s accounting, the extra night has already been paid for in the funds that were raise. That now leaves you with $900+ for spending money (taxis, meals, souveniers).

Shame, though, that the generous fans who contributed to this project were almost browbeaten about the extra $400 for the oxygen tank when many knew and pointed out to you that this would be covered by Medicare and addressed this directly to YOU to have it unanswered. Only after this fact was pointed out by several members on AO and other questions asked did Sean have his people post on AO that all contributions could stop as everything had been met. Even more shameful is that from the start, contributors were told that any excess funds would be sent to Adam’s APPROVED charity called Donors Choose.

It is one thing to be overwhelmed by the generosity of strangers. It is totally another to put blinders on and not accepted any personal responsibility.

Top Idol—You were wondering about Sean’s history with AO. I was a regular visitor there when he first started posting. It was a week after the AMAs and the fanbase was megafreaking over the backlash from the performance.

Sean introduced himself as a married gay man from New York (no mention of Canada) who loved Adam so much he had bought 500 copies of his CD from Amazon. I thought that was a bit much but realized it was an effective way to instantly disarm the fans and ingratiate himself with them. As I recall, the title of his thread was “Let’s Talk About All Things….Gay”. He told them he was there to have fun and answer their questions about gay culture but shared some personal stuff about himself right away, making him seem vulnerable. Of course, people fell all over themselves trying to be his new BFF. The guy was charming and developed a devoted following (like a fan club within a fan club). When ABC cancelled Adam’s other appearances, the fans went ballistic. Sean started yelling for them to inundate ABC with e-mails and tweets. Which they did. It felt a lot like that scene from “Frankenstein” involving angry villagers, torches and pitchforks. He was quite adept at manipulation.

Eventually some of the long-time members of AO started resented Sean for whatever reasons and they got vocal about it. Things got messy when Sean called them ignorant homophobes and made a dramatic exit, threatening never to return (a recurrent pattern with him as you know). But he dug deep, bravely regrouped (according to him) and was back at AO within a few days recommitted to doing whatever.

I stopped visiting the site when I realized that “crazy” is the norm there, so I don’t know what happened that caused Sean to be banned from AO but that’s when Jake showed up to defend his man (and sounded a lot like Sean while he did it). Sean did return to AO for awhile but he doesn’t seem to post there much anymore, maybe because he has a blog.

What I noticed was that Sean’s posts weren’t usually about Adam’s music, his TV appearances, boyfriends, etc.—the usual stuff fans obsess over. He would mention how much he loved Adam or thought Adam was sexy but for the most part he kept the focus on himself. So when I learned he was behind the Isabel/Fantasy Springs thing, red flags went up. Anyway, I thought I’d share what I remember because I always felt uneasy about the guy.

About the 500 CDs he claims to have bought— Some fans were skeptical because they ordered Adam’s CD from Amazon that same week and were limited to 3 per customer. So either he had some big-ass connections to get around that restriction or he used 167 different accounts.

Mithra – no, my intial impressions have not changed. From Jake’s long rants, it’s obvious to anyone with two clues to rub together that these are two very disturbed people, and truth be known, I felt kinda sorry for them – that is, until Jake began making threats.

I really don’t doubt that the initial fundraising intent was genuine, but what everyone seems to be missing is that it totally violates the forum rules. And if it indeed is genuine, there should be no problem with openness and accountability. All we are getting is defensive posturing from the parties involved and their supporters.

My mom is 84 and loves Adam too. But the last place I would ever take her is flying halfway across the country to a rock concert. And my mom is not on oxygen nor needs a wheelchair. If these people donating honestly think that if something happens to Isabel her family will not litigate……….well, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell them.

As for addressing Jake’s initial rant into the forum, I (and a couple of others) did address what he said, however briefly. Here’s what I posted:

I was tempted to address Jake’s “offer” to refund money only if he could publicly humiliate you, but 1) I didn’t contribute and 2) it kind of spoke to itself re stupidity.

Neither one of these guys are thinking clearly. And yep, some members are spamming with youtube links to try to get the thread to die down. The war was intense and heated last night. I can’t see how you could be a fan of Adam and want this nonsense anywhere on his site. But that’s just me. Hopefully, the mods (wherever they are) will delete the thread soon.

This smells like a scam to me. So many red flags here. First of all, all they wanted was an accounting of the money and how much was collected and they have every right to get this information. Instead SweetSexySean gets VERY defensive. Then we get Jake, “the husband”. I don’t buy any of it. Sean and Jake sound like the same person to me! Jake posted “you can have your money back, but then I’m outting you to the rest of the fanbase.” This is what cults do! I have a feeling the daughter is in on it too.

It’s really sad that Idol fans get taken like this and this has not been the first time–the Claymates and the Soul Patrol has their share of scammers. It’s hard to understand how easily they can part with their money without asking any questions. It must have to do with being the bestest fan, so that they can gain some kind of importance in the fanbase. So sad.

Here is the thing for me: ShellyBeMe provided some proof that Jake, Sean and Istrea exists. She/He did not say that they were scamming at all. So there is no reason to attack her/him.

Sean/Jake totally panicked because Shelly said she will look at their passport pictures come Monday.

BTW jakelovessean please sue me: I am a double citizen of two other countries than Canada and US who lives in the US. It can can get exponentially confusing for all of us. We might even get the ICJ involved.

No saskin, ShellyBeMe said that the email she received from “sweetsexysean” had a Vancouver IP and ISP. She then found that there are two married men living in Vancouver named Sean and Jake, but that means nothing. It could be identity theft by some crazy shipper frau who read a story in the paper about their marriage. The pic of Sean, the only pic, is EXTREMELY suspicious. First off, and I take in account that people age differently, and my family on both sides look a lot younger than we are – this guy if he’s 38 is in the minority of we who have “kick awesome” (I had to just say that once for all the Kristards here) genes He looks to be early 20s. JSYK FOIA doesnt apply unless you’re talking about doing a FOIA on Shellybe and her/his agency. It has to go through a Public Info Officer of the agency dept in question and there were no govt agencies involved here like there would be say, in a public college. Hi SammyJo58. I really doubt that AO is responsible for this. So, don’t worry.

I don’t know if this is a scam or not. Their frenzied reaction might suggest so. I don’t know. But either way, there is no need to victimize the victim. Sometimes we get scammed just because it makes us happy. I did once. I was fully aware of it. I am still proud of it. It was awesome. You learn from it and move on.

I hope Isabelle gets there and enjoys the show.

When I was in NYC I gave a guy who asked for money in a McDonalds $5. The owner then came out and kicked him out saying “You again? Next time you come in here, I’m going to call the cops.”
It was a pretty minor scam but I still felt stupid.

I was just reading over there and made the mistake of clicking on a few youtube links they posted. I don’t blame them for using that tactic. A lot of fandoms will spam a thread with what they consider positive posts to push the negative stuff down the page. But omfg I need brain bleach after watching some of that stuff. Don’t they realize there is a difference between sexy and vulgar?

Apologies to Lauren and any other Adam fans here. His on stage theatrics are just not to my taste.

In re: AO and its liability… I don’t think that is even a question. But I do wonder if RCA will at some point find it so inconvenient to even have an official Adam site that they will just close it down and let his fans do their own damn sites where they bloviate all they want about their newest fundraising campaigns and lawlers and conspiracies and blahblahblahcrazycakes.

If it were me, I wouldn’t want to mess with it. It’d be, yeah, I don’t think this guy needs an official site. He needs to shut up, stop twittering, send out a phalanx of supernannies to get this part of the fandom in line and surround himself with a passel of bodyguards carrying cattle prods.

I don’t know if this is related, but Adam recently mentioned that he and his management are talking about creating an official fan club. Sounds like a good idea because managing the AO “community” has got to be a headache for them. The mod has tried to educate the fans about the music industry so now some of them feel there’s a relationship and they expect him to be available 24/7 to handle whatever they’re upset about at any given moment. It’s a mess and the level of pettiness and hysteria there is an embarrassment.

I feel so bad for the posters on AO who are getting attacked for questioning this. There is so much proof against it yet people are STILL donating? Call me cold-hearted, but I would never donate to a source I didn’t have all the facts about.

Hi Mitha and others – I just signed up here as I was going to post my original thoughts on the issue that I did on AO yesteray, however, I see you just beat me to it and copied my post on the liability issues.

I am a big Adam fan, a proud (straight) Minion (with gay family members), and mostly post in the Castle. However, when I see insanity happening on other threads, I don’t like to see anyone get hurt due to the generosity of their hearts, and I certainly don’t want any repercussions for Adam or his management/RCA over this issue, which is TOTALLY outside of the boundaries of his forum. We are not all idiots over there, in fact, I’ve made some very good friends. Unfortunately, the few crazies ruin the reputations of the rest of it, and I can see how it leaves a bad taste in everyone’s mouth.

I truly hope for Isabel’s sake that this is all on the up and up, and that she is well enough to survive the trip with no medical issues.

Jake showed up again to whine about how his baby’s heart is broken. He still didn’t answer any of the many questions that posters have asked. No answer as to why the paypal wasn’t set up to show a running total, why they are asking for money to pay for a wheelchair and oxygen that medicare should be covering or why they didn’t collect money through a third party like a bank near Isabel who could put the money into an account in her or her daughter’s name.

Oh wait I take that back. He did offer an explanation for why the total raised has not been released. He claims that they want to surprise Isabel and they don’t want her to feel overwhelmed or embarrassed by the amount donated. This whole pile of crap stinks more with each post Jake writes.

Neither Adam nor AO promoted this ‘charity’. In fact, hasn’t AO’s mod deleted the threads involving this scam? ‘Sean’ and his multiple personalities are also using IDF and Twitter to publicize their scam.

Unfortunately, it’s up to the consumer to be careful about sending money to an unknown person via the internet. These ladies didn’t learn their lesson after the whole gridlock fiasco when someone promised seating and backed out at the last minute. At least that wasn’t a money scam.

I think that’s what going to happen. Isabel, who btw did you know she’s ALMOST 90 YEARS OLD BECAUSE THAT MUST SCREAMED AT ALL TIMES, will make it to the show but someone’s going to be getting themselves a little extra for their “troubles.” Again I just don’t understand why the money is going to a third party and not straight to Isabel and her daughter. “Surprises” my ass.

I think it’s legit. I thought Isabelle had enough and was going. I donated a couple hundred recently so I certainly hope it was not a scam. But I really do not think it is. Sean – please confirm that Isabelle is going and has the funds we all contributed.

Because they have been posting and raising money through the Adam Official site for weeks, RCA may be liable for this scam if all does not go well and funds are not 100% accounted for. Methinks “Jake” is barking up the wrong lawler tree and may need to find a denfense attorney:

Well, we all know that the road to he11 is paved with good intentions…….I just hope for the sake of AO, Adam, Isabel and all the kind hearted people who donated that this thing comes off without any hitches. I have nothing but total respect for those who donated to this through their generosity. From this beginning, this has made me very uncomfortable and I strongly considered sending a heads up to AO – I am in total agreement with KatieJ and Oshi. However, because it has been promoted on this site for WEEKS (not days), I assumed the Mods were aware of it.
Slam me if you like guys, but I worked in the commercial insurance industry for over 20 years and used to handle some big accounts (Esso Petroleum Canada) and what everyone seems to be missing here, including Sean, is that:
1) Each person who donated has a comeback on AO should this not turn out to be totally legit.
2) Because this was openly promoted on Adam’s site, both ADAM and AO could be held liable in legal action should ANYTHING go wrong with this trip – including if it turns out to be too much for Isabel at her age and she has any medical problems. What about if she gets to her destination and gets sick?? Who is going to look after all her medical bills?? Adam? AO?? Sean??? Glad to know Sean has deep pockets, because if push comes to shove, he may need them.
RMGed, sorry I didn’t say something earlier, but I rather assumed that was your responsibility, not mine. And to all fans who donated, again, I know your hearts were in the right place. I just don’t want to see anyone get hurt over this, including Isabel.
Now I suppose I can look forward to Sean slamming me on Twitter. Oh well, that’s the least of my problems right now…….
