Kris Allen might be the most likeable American Idol winner ever

2009 November 25

Snuggie Photo from Kris Allen's TwitPic

I’m not a tard. But if I was gonna be a tard, I might tard over Kris Allen.

Yo, 19 Entertainment, Jive Records, all of you yahoos. Do you see what you’re sitting on here? This guy won American Idol without even showing the country one-fourth of his personality or humping anything. I don’t even like this damn show, yet I’m now in too deep with this stupid blog that I can’t stop. Don’t you see that I’m the type of bitter, hollier-than-thou asshat who considers myself above your stupid, manipulative tactics and shitty ass 1:30 karaoke numbers mostly of music I hated to begin with? (For chrissake, do I really need to hear someone else sing I Can’t Make You Love Me ever again?)

I will never make a puffy-paint shirt or slave over an inspirational (s)crapbook to give to some guy I saw on TV. I don’t squee and I don’t thud. I don’t have impure thoughts about men younger than me, especially those who are too young to remember Reagan. I don’t even pick up the phone and vote when you flash those (800) numbers on the screen. Let’s face it, although blogging about this shit show has done more for my writing career than interviewing Paul Rudd and James Cameron, or even getting a M.A. in Journalism, I hate it. I hate American Idol.

But had I never watched this nonsense or been told to write this blog by my old employer, I would have never discovered Kris Allen. I know there are a bunch of batshit crazy Glamberts who claim Adam Lambert is the key to opening up the hearts and minds to those “different” (uh…yeah…), claiming he changed their lives and “awakened” them (I guess that’s what happens when you have a hot flash during prime time television?). But what about people like me? Arrogant east coast liberal types who consider themselves above such low-brow mainstream television. Hell, we only like to admit we watch stuff like Mad Men. And Kris Allen, the clean-cut Christian boy from Arkansas with a young blond homecoming queen wife–seriously, do you know how much people like me hate that sort of thing–reminded me that I shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. That maybe this guy was actually really cool! And really talented! And probably more open minded then asshats like me. (I still liked him after finding out he’s a John Mayer fan. This is usually a dealbreaker.)

And the more I see of Kris Allen outside of the Idol bubble, the more I like this guy. He’s hilarious. I don’t even just follow Kris Allen on Twitter because I have to follow Idol people on Twitter because of this blog. This guy is the real deal. He’s more real than most people I know. In fact, he’s an original, even though he wears store-bought plaid shirts and doesn’t seem to wear foundation. Because he’s just being himself. And so few people ever bother being themselves, ya know?

So, seriously, Idol / Jive / 19E people. Have you guys come up with a strategy for this one? Because he might actually be the one male winner you ever have to make it outside of the scary little Idol world. He might actually be able to sell records and tickets to asshats like me. He might eventually be mentioned without the words American Idol in the sentence. Like, he plays how many instruments and has been writing music for how long? And OMG. He is funny. Like naturally funny (not unintentionally funny, like that Danny Gokey guy, for instance). Really, what’s the deal? Can’t you put him on a few more shows (come on, this guy would be sit-down interview gold with Conan, Letterman and Kimmel)? Maybe get him some random guest spots on Comedy Central’s Adult Swim, perhaps, totally good for street cred. Can you get him to sing at one of those improbably “all-ages nightspots” found on any teenage show on the CW? What about booking him for a set at Coachella? Or perhaps Bonnaroo? Maybe get him as the musical guest on SNL and even allow him to be in a couple of skits? For chrissake, put him on that Glee shit. Everyone loves that damn show. It’s like one of the only things idiots will watch when they’re not concocting sick fantasies about being tag-teamed by a werewolf and an emo vampire. See? The appeal of Kris Allen is endless. He could be American Idol and American Apparel. He’s the guy who might actually be adored by not only moms and little girls, but also frat boys and pompous asshats and gays and churchgoers and atheists, maybe even a few obnoxious Brooklyn hipsters. There are just so many things you could do with this kid, you know?

So just do it.

Spread the word. Do it.

    http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/realityrocks/296665/a-tale-of-two-idols-sales/

Lyndsey Parker article comparing first week sales…Glamberts are now attacking her (even though Adam’s album outsold HBD’s by a large margin) Here is an excerpt from a comment explaining how HBD even managed to sell as many as he did:

“As far as media exposure goes, i believe that Kris received alot more promotion from the record label then Adam..
Adam has been promoting Kris all along..if he had not, i predict that Kris’s sales would have been even lower..alot of Adam fans have purchased Kris’s cd just cause Adam had asked us to.”

lolololololololololololololol. (Yep that was Adam on the AMA’s promoting Kris, and there has been so MUCH promotion from the label…they can’t even put up some damn posters)

    • lauren722

I know! It’s the most ridiculous thing ever. Glamberts have been attacking her in the comments and on twitter for an article that she attempted to be neutral in for once. They are saying things like “Why are you justifying Kris’ low numbers? If it had been the reverse, you wouldn’t be doing the same for Adam!” First, she was giving her take, there’s nothing wrong with that. Second, anyone who has read any blog by Lyndsey knows she is a Glambert! She’s not an Adam-hater! People are so mad at her for being nice to Kris. It’s so weird. I had to unfollow several people!

    • auntieaimee

Yeah, it’s like Lord of the Flies over there. Eek.

    • Claire

“Kris’s sales would have been even lower..alot of Adam fans have purchased Kris’s cd just cause Adam had asked us to.”

So when Adam says “jump”, they say, “how high?” They buy what they consider mediocre crap from an average singer because Adam said so in 140 characters or less? I realize that poster is trying to insult HBD , but that statement just makes alot [sic] of Glam-berts/skanks/tards/twats/whatever look like mindless sheep.

      • lauren722

Some of them are mindless sheep! To the point that they bash any music that isn’t Adam approved. I’m sure they no longer listen to Kiss because Adam says Gene Simmons isn’t that good of a singer. Whenever Adam mentions an artist they are automatically OMG THE BEST IN THE WORLD besides Adam of course :)
Or maybe I’m just bitter they were bashing Owl City ;)
It’s the anti-Kradam Glamberts that are the trouble-makers I tell you! My faction loves all Kradam/ Kradison/ Adison (yuck)!

        • saskin

But do you like Megan Joy?

          • lauren722

            Haha personally I don’t…sorry :(

          • deez

I’m really happy for Adam and I’m happy for Kris as well. I really don’t think he cares as long as he’s able to support his family doing what he loves. I think LP is right about Kris. He will probably go the David Cook route (not a bad thing) and who knows, maybe Adam will be an international supastah(eleventy!!!) In the long run, I think both of them are right where they want to be. UGH!!!! I’m starting to wish to wish Kris had never won, Glamberts are too much. (I know there are some insane Kristards…I’ve seen ridiculous comments from them as well…but the Glamberts just seem to have more concentrated venom, IDK) Thank goodness for Lauren, Sourcandy, Sherena and a handful of others…please spread the sanity!

          • saskin

Bummer. Because Megan Joy is awesome. (I’m not fantarding. She is good. Not a good singer but very expressive voice.)

    • Claire

Wow! The number of comments from that Lyndsey Parker article have practically tripled since I last checked. So much hate from both “teams.”

They’re rehashing the whole AR voting “scandal”, calling Adam a famewhoring queer (now that qualifies as an actual homophobic statment), saying that Adam’s sales would rival SuBo’s if only he were straight, proposing a pay-per-vote method of AI voting because apparently Adam’s fans only voted one time each (bitch please), saying Adam is all style and no substance, ragging on Adam’s AMA performance, bla bla bla.

Of course, like a trainwreck, I couldn’t look away :)

      • lauren722

Oh my! I can’t believe its gotten worse! Adam’s fans were really saying terrible things on there. They can’t seem to accept the fact that you can vote for someone and then not buy the album. Voting is free. Poor Lyndsey. Caught in the middle :(

  • jujubee

This is probably the most head-scratchingly weird post I have ever read on this blog…so, Glamberts/Lambert fans, whatever you want to call them, are incessantly mocked for being OTT and crazt, yet TopIdol yherself writes a valentine to Kris Allen, all the while declaring that she is not a fantard, and the usual KA fans, plus a whole bevy of new posters, chime in and moon that he is soo organic, and real and cute and funny and such a real musician and is just in it “for the music” etc. etc. yet none of them are OTT or crazy Kris Allen fans….hilarious……

    • on the edge

I think the piece is dead-on. And sure we may be Kristards; I can’t speak for Top Idol but I kinda am…sorta. Difference is though I bought his album and went to the one Idol stop that was closest to me, in the end I’m too busy trying to get tenure, buy a house, spend quality time with my husband, do the Christmas shopping, plan my trip to Washington next summer, etc. to dedicate a lot of time to “tard” over Kris (or David Cook for that matter). Will I go see him in concert if he plays a date near me? Sure. Will I travel across the country, venue to venue, to see him? Uh, no. And in case you haven’t noticed, there are quite a few Adam fans that post here, side-by-side with Kris fans and even anti-Idol fans, and we post with mutual respect and an expectation of snark. No need to defend any Idol’s “honor.” These are big boys, they can take it.

And Top Idol has an excuse to spend an inordinate amount of time on the Idols…heck it’s part of her job. Defending HER honor, yeah we do that.

      • TopIdol

That’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever read. Thank you. And you have no idea how happy it made me considering I CANNOT POST RIGHT NOW BECAUSE OF HOLLY SOCKPUPPETS.

Third time since Wednesday. This is absolutely ridiculous.

        • Smartie

          MaryAnn Ellis is a cunt

          • on the edge

Calling Mary Ann Ellis a cunt is an insult to vaginas everywhere. But it’ll do.

        • Sandy

But…..I thought Holly was supposed to be against censorship…….and yet here she goes trying to censor you. What a hypocrite she is!

  • Kathy

Totally agree. Great post. I don’t see why they don’t get what they’ve got here.

  • barado

Delurking to say how much I love this post.

This guy has talent, looks, personality, – when will 19E recognize that?

And you are so right in noting how Kris is “naturally funny.” His tweets are a goldmine of humor because it’s all about things he identifies as funny himself. Compare that to Danny who this summer was tweeting (lame) jokes he found on some website. Even Danny’s attempts at humor were karaoke, but Kris is original in this, just by being himself.

  • Rarely Comment

Thank you for your post, Top Idol. I have never followed anyone’s career post-Idol until Kris Allen came along. I like his music and believe he has great potential. As to the male demographic, Kris is the one AI winner my college son actually likes. And Kris does have a quietly subversive sense of humor. He has handled the crap thrown his way with extraordinary class, well beyond his years.

  • Verbally Dyslexic

I must say in light of Thanksgiving and all, hope you guys celebrating are having a good one. And hope that HBD drunk tweets something later (Katy, don’t take away his iphone!).

  • David

He probably is a nice and funny guy. However, the voting scandal causing by the power voting of Arkansas makes it impossible for millions of people to like him.
    Absolutely impossible.

    • TopIdol

The “voting scandal” was a joke. I think that’s already been proven. Is that still being used as a reason why Lambert came in second?

Contestants from the south always win because they are able to drum up bigger statewide support.

    • Starr

Oh, David. It’s more elaborate than that. It was a government conspiracy. Barack Obama’s children were Kris Allen fans. Everyone knows the needs of the children must always be a priority. He sent a covert group of specialists to Arkansas to rig the computer systems so that all votes from the state that went to Adam were rerouted to count towards Kris. They blackmailed all 10 Adam Lambert fans in Arkansas to vote for Kris, too! The fiends! And then all 38 million Arkansas individuals were contacted via robocall to vote for Kris, or Arkansas would be forced to secede from the Union.

I can’t wait until someone with balls exposes such a scandal! Write a book, call in to Nancy Grace, do whatever it takes to get this scheme exposed! THE AMERICAN PUBLIC HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW! Oh, wait. I think someone from AdamOfficial already is. The day is saved…Thanks to Glambert696969!

      • http://deleted Margie

        That is funny as hell

      • http://www.affinityhealthandbeauty.co.uk Lamberkitten

LOL! It is true as well – it’s a lawyer (lawler?) writing the book.

        • themightyrose

          you’re kidding right?

    • spinningfasterandfastertonowhere

Well if that was the case then you better not like Carrie, Cook, Kelly, Fantasia, Cook and ALL the idols who come from small states in the South and Midwest. And even second place winners like Clay and Archie had people in their state, with low populations power voting.

Some of you Bitterberts must be new to Idol, because it has been a know fact for years. Some of the Bitterberts have been spreading that around to every newspaper and messageboard they could, but funny that it has been going on EVERY YEAR.

And also there were instructions for Adam Lambert fans to use the same tactics, plus for those Glamberts who lived overseas to vote illegally for Adam. So why weren’t they called out for cheating if they were doing the same? As far as I know EVERYONE does it. They had sites and links for every top 5 contestant. All of them had voters from overseas voting for them, and they weren’t supposed to, including Glamberts.

Most big states like California and NY seldom get beyond someone from their state to vote on Idol because they are jaded with stars because there are many living in their backyard already.

      • deez

Exactly! If you live in Arkansas, you aren’t going to see a celebrity every day! I mean WHO could just walk outside their building in the morning and see JON HAMM???? That shit don’t happen in Little Rock!

        • TopIdol

It could happen at certain times of the year in St. Louis, perhaps? Oh crap, I’m talking about Jon Hamm again. I hope he goes to STL for Xmas. A girl can dream, can’t she?

          • http://deleted Margie

Our” famous” people here are the Razorback football players…lol we love our Hogs:)

      • TopIdol

They’re pissed because they didn’t “cheat” hard enough.

  • lauren722

Ok I don’t feel like reading all the comments lol.
But I am late to the party once again! Even as an Adam-tard from the very beginning, I never found Kris boring! Glamberts who insult Kris are not true fans! I LOVE Kris’ personality so much :)
He’s adorable and hilarious ( and the perfect match for Adam ;) ) hehe

    • http://www.affinityhealthandbeauty.co.uk Lamberkitten

You are such a Kradamite! Happy Thanksgiving – though am not entirely sure what that is – but have a good one :)

      • lauren722

        Haha I am!
It’s a celebration of how the white people murdered the Native Americans after their plentiful generosity toward the colonists :)
        I’m a thanksgiving skeptic

        • TopIdol

Yes, I still vividly recall the filmstrips shown to my classes early in elementary school showing the pilgrims and Native Americans sitting down to eat turkey and corn at a rustic picnic bench. They never showed the part when the smallpox-laden blankets were distributed (although I think this was at least 100 years later, still…)

In case anyone was wondering, Oskar also had Thanksgiving dinner.

          http://www.merrickpetcare.com/store/canned_cat_food.php?u=&ss=&c=52&submit_next=2

          • deez

            The Turducken??

          • TopIdol

Nah, the Thanksgiving Day Dinner. Perhaps he will get Turducken for Xmas?

        • http://www.affinityhealthandbeauty.co.uk Lamberkitten

Oh dear, I see why you a Thanksgiving skeptic, who wouldnt be in that case. Here in UK, we celebrate a bloke called Guy Fawkes (Bonfire Night is commonly called) every Nov 5th – he and his followers tried to blow up the Government buildings and its inhabitants a few hundred years back. And we celebrate by letting off fireworks and lighting bonfires. Not quite sure if we celebrate him getting caught and killed, or whether we celebrate cos he tried to do it – like to think that it is the latter as is far more rock n roll! And yeah, apart from the mad porno fanfic, I can easily take a little Kradam myself :)

  • Shar100

Thank you, I love this post and atleast someone thinks Kris is a great American Idol. He is great, he’s talented and amazing and he does have a great personality and he is HILARIOUS.

  • nan

Nice guy, but totally boring music…maybe that’s why not many people bought it..where are the 38 million people from Arkansas that voted, why aren’t they buying his album..I wonder if he didn’t win if he would have gotten a contract..I don’t think so

    • http://deleted Margie

Well dumbass there aren’t 38 million people in AR….this statement youposter is why I can’t stand Adam. His Fans and him are such hyprocites.

      • http://deleted Margie

Sorry that is one of my pet peeves…hypocrcy

These old farts are buying like 15 alums a pop …i need to stop..lol
        Don’t ban me…lol…had a couple of beers..its Turke yDay!!!

        • http://www.affinityhealthandbeauty.co.uk Lamberkitten

This old fart admits to buying 3 only! One for ipod, one for hard copy cos need to feel the papery bit and have Adam in my hand and one for my son, a metal singer who loves Adam – not entirely sure if he will like Adam’s electro-pop but he did ask me for a copy. But dont worry Margie, you wont get banned, you are on the side of the right and the just (that will be Kris btw) so don’t worry enjoy your beers and turkey. Jellus bout the beers, turkey not so much :)

          • TopIdol

I planned on posting Lambert’s Letterman performance today, but Holly Sockpuppets has complained to WordPress and I can’t POST again until I hear back from them.

            NOT HAPPY.

          • http://www.affinityhealthandbeauty.co.uk Lamberkitten

So, the conspiracy thickens, Popsucker is against Adam too!!! Just jokin. That’s a bitch TI. Keep posting us here for updates on situation.

          • Lakshmi

You can’t post at all? Yikes. Crossing my fingers that everything will be resolved soon.

          • 8sourcandy

            Complained about what?

          • Verbally Dyslexic

Oh no! I hope the situation blows over real soon.

    • spinningfasterandfastertonowhere

As if Danny Gokey fans were gonna vote for Adam after he got the boot from Idol the week before the finale.

I can’t believe people are that stupid not to see it?

19E hyped the Gokey vs Lambert finale from the beginning. So their fans chose camps. Just like in football. Kris was not part of the ‘hatred’ and rivalry. In fact up to the last week Paula, Randy and Simon were promoting the Gokey vs Lambert finale…UNTIL that week when Gokey had his “moment” that lost it for him. His “Scream On” moment and lost that week. Kris was also getting fans from other fanbases who dropped out that despised Gokey and hated the over pimping of Adam. Plus Kris’s Heartless performance helped push him over the top.

Now anyone with a half a brain would automatically see that Gokey fans were not going to vote for Adam…that would be a cold day in hell, and it was not because of “Homophobia”, it was because of rivalry. Just like in sports.

So they voted for Kris OVER Adam, so that Adam would not win. Somehow some of Adam’s fans can’t face that fact. They assume everyone loves Adam just like they do.

There were several sites online describing how to power vote for Adam, even on Adam’s IDF section.

Also on Dial Idol every time a contestant was voted off, like Matt and Anoop, funny thing happened. The states that they came from started to vote for other people NOT ADAM. Anyone BUT Adam. I guess they also saw the over pimping and fawning by 19E over Adam and voted AGAINST Adam.

So many people, who can’t think, blame Kris for Adam not getting the crown, who btw the show had been promoting and hyping for months.

Even that dope Gokey knew it. He said it on the Larry King Live. If that dope can see it I am surprised that some Glambert tards can’t. I guess there are plenty of idiots out there.

So for people to keep saying it was all conspiracy by Kris fans (when Adam’s fans were doing the same thing) can’t get it through their thick skulls and it shows their level of intelligence.

      • spinningfasterandfastertonowhere

Sorry other Glamberts, but that was my response to nan, not to you.
        ;)

      • TopIdol

I’ve actually met several people who loved “Adam and Danny”. I didn’t know this was possible. Where did I meet these people, you ask? When the tour was here, so these were people buying tix to the damn tour…devoted fans, I suppose?

Who knows. Thought it was bizarre.

      • http://www.affinityhealthandbeauty.co.uk Lamberkitten

Just reading that, I don’t understand how anyone could not be a fan just cos the judges were over-pimping. It always pleased me to hear the judges praising Adam. I think this part of the argument doesn’t really hold water. If the judges are over-pimping the artist you like all is well and good – if they are not pimping who you like then – not so good.

        • Starr

Over-pimping is bad, whether it be for Adam, Danny or anyone else. The complaint about overpimping is not that Adam does not deserve praise. He deserved praise for many a performance. The problem is when that praise remains consistent despite a genuinely bad performance, and yet this same treatment does not apply to other contestants. “One” and “Cryin’” were some of Adam’s weakest performances and yet he got plenty of praise for it. Danny did that “Scream On” performance and he got an A+ for effort? Screw effort, what happened to F for butchering a good song? What made me really mad was during Rock Week, when Kris got the worst reviews of the night, despite being the ONLY one on that stage to actually rearrange a song and make it his own.

Oh, and it’s also overpimping when Simon asks people to vote for a particular contestant. I don’t care if it’s Adam or Danny- when a judge goes out of his way to tell people that they need to vote for someone in particular, that’s way out of line.

    • Starr

Oh, nan! Your post is adorable! Look at you making an effort! It’s OK, not everyone is good at Math or Statistics. I mean, all those zeroes in a million? How can we expected to remember how many there are! They should really have some kind of eligibility test for fantards. I feel such second-hand embarrassment towards this post right now.

  • saskin

I don’t know why my comment went right in the middle of an other topic also why there are like 20 “usually”s in that last parenthesis. This is almost too real for this century, why can’t we undo/edit?

  • saskin

OMG. I’ll go buy a few more copies of the album and give it to my relatives this Xmas (I don’t care if they tease me) for you guys.

I agree, this kid (and his adorable wife) could have been the greatest holiday story ever told, he could have been outselling SuBo right now. But you can’t change history. If you needed further proof, here you have it: idol guys are idiots.

Season 8 was about Adam Lambert and Adam Lambert only; the greatest singer of all times. There was also Danny Gokey, who will try manipulate the religious vote to beat him and 11 other kids who are not Adam Lambert. The tour was about Adam Lambert, 11 kids who are not Adam Lambert and the jerk that beat him. 50 states. That was the story told. That is like Titanic. No one can turn that ship around.

Watching history is a bit like riding in the trunk of a truck. You can only see where you’ve been but you can’t see where you’re going. So, I’ll speculate. I doubt, Simon Fuller & Co. are satisfied with this result. Lambert should have been wiping the floor with SuBo considering the investment they’ve made in him; one whole season of a very popular reality show+one whole tour of a very popular show+the record producing and promoting costs. Some folk might believe that “the press just loooooves him”, I’m not that naive. Some things the press printed were almost like press releases. Makes you wonder. You know? They planned to launch him like they would’ve launched MJ. And what did they gain?

Some might argue that they’ve already spent the money they’ve spent, so they might be willing to throw some good money after the bad to recoup. But I’ll stick by my opinion that they will try to cut their losses and run because to me it does not make any business sense at all.

The other kid, your kid, on the other hand will be OK, he is not going to be a superstar but he will be OK. They did not spend a penny to promote him during or after the show, if anything they spent ‘him’ to promote Lambert and after the show they spent maybe the optimal $$ for his record production. He is a lot more cost effective. He just happened to stumble into their hands. He writes his own stuff, he picked a musical style that is not that dependent on looks (which he has) or age, he has a lot of fans, he is really making an impact on the radio, his single is holiday season friendly so I think it will increase spins during the holidays, his whole album is radio friendly, he will probably tour college campuses and small venues which are very cheap to tour, he has a ready audience that he only needs to reach… etc. Idol folk are stupid but business people are usually smarter.

Maybe I’m being stubborn but until the truck stops I am not going to decide where we arrived.

(This Idol thing is my early morning guilty pleasure so I’m usually the last to comment. That is why I usually comment on the whole argument rather than my own point of view on the original topic because when I finally wake up and read it there is usually nothing left to say. And I know this post is tl;dr especially for thanksgiving.)

    • isidra

I never really thought about it, but LLWD IS very holiday friendly, isn’t it? In fact, it’s probably the most holiday friendly song on the album.

I like the song, but wondered why they’d pick it over some of the other songs which are clearly better for pop radio (Such as Before We Come Undone, or Alright With Me, in my opinion) but none of the songs I think best suit radio are particularly holiday friendly. His management is cleverer than I thought.

    • auntieaimee

Great analysis, Saskin. I agree with you.

    • 12cubed

Some folk might believe that “the press just loooooves him”, I’m not that naive. Some things the press printed were almost like press releases. Makes you wonder. You know?

I feel exactly the same way.

I agree, this kid (and his adorable wife) could have been the greatest holiday story ever told, he could have been outselling SuBo right now. But you can’t change history. If you needed further proof, here you have it: idol guys are idiots.

Sigh. It’s been a tough several months for Kris fans–and probably tougher for Kris.

Between Top Idol’s post (see, I do know where I am) and saskin’s comment it’s more like Christmas than Thanksgiving in here this morning for a Kris fan. Could not agree more saskin. Not tl at all.

      • Lynn

        DITTO!

        Thank you all for Krismas!

    • 12cubed

They did not spend a penny to promote him during or after the show, if anything they spent ‘him’ to promote Lambert and after the show they spent maybe the optimal $$ for his record production.

A truckload of WORD. Truer words were never spoken. It’s sad, and frustrating, and more than a little indicative of the stupidity of 19/Sony. They’ve got a likeable, marketable, talented winner on their hands and they’re using him as a tool to continue and prop up Lambert.

    • GlambertNumberThree

How exactly did they “spend” Kris Allen to promote Adam? 19 can’t help it if one of their contestants is a natural attention magnet and a once in a lifetime talent, and the other is a boring coffeehouse guy who only won because America couldn’t handle a gay Idol.

I bet you can’t give me a single example of the Idol franchise deliberately sabotaging Kris to help Adam. You tards are just looking for any excuse for the miserable sales numbers.

      • catharsisfromschool

Calling people tards using that username… I am laughing my ass off.

      • Starr

A “natural attention magnet” is just a nicer way to say “fame whore”, but whatever gets you through the day, love.

    • feeny4evr

This is fantastic. I agree :D

    • 12cubed

saskin, I’d love to hear more of your thoughts on how 19 “spent” Kris to help Adam. I can think of a few things, but I’m wondering how this looks from the perspective of someone who isn’t a Kris fan, like myself (yes, I am a tard. Heh.)

    • 8sourcandy

Nothing quite says rock and roll like “cost effectiveness.”

  • http://www.eliza.freetxp.com aeyelle

    Hey TI!

I couldn’t help myself but delurk to let you know how much I totally agree with this article. You said everything I wanted to say in one breath (and more!)

    A+

  • http://www.affinityhealthandbeauty.co.uk Lamberkitten

This is a good post! Am almost convinced. But it is a flaw of my character that I am very open to suggestion – would be a hypnotherapist’s dream client. Kris is ok, mildly amusing, nice voice, good looking, tv and radio friendly. He should do fine. When I first watched Idol on Ring of Fire night, I pegged Kris, Gokey and Adam for top 3. That later changed to Allison for top 3, Gokey out! But I admit the only reason Kris is still on my radar really is because of the connection with Adam. Sorry, but it’s true. Idol is a double edged sword – you get your fame from it but also the snobbery by some that it is not valid entry to the music industry. But with the right mix of professional support, fan support and a hint of luck will normally ensure that true talent gets the success it deserves. Good luck to Kris. And he tweeted the day after AMAs for people to go buy Adam’s cd. Great timing and a sweet gesture. Love him for that.

  • feeny4evr

This post gives my poor Kris loving soul well deserved rest. I have never EVER been this devoted to an Idol (and that’s a sad fact since a former Idol contestant was a close neighbor of mine..) and before season 7 the closest I came to watching the dumb show was one random episode of Canadian idol I saw while on vacation. I think the reason that I grew attached to him was because his chill personality still managed to create great music. That being said…
I’ve been so sick of the Adam fame whoring fest the last few days that it’s starting to severely turn me off to him (which is sad because at one point I liked him well enough) and I’m glad there is somewhere that recognizes the guy who relies on his music (shock!) instead of his stunts to gain popularity. I do believe that karma WILL kick in eventually and poetic justice will happen and, just like on the stupid show, he will overcome the stigma and he will come out on top. Karma’s a bitch, but it works.

    • http://www.affinityhealthandbeauty.co.uk Lamberkitten

Hey I understand your point, you never were a fan of reality music shows before, you saw Kris and boom! Same goes for me – only that happened when I saw Adam. Adam, as a person, has only ever supported Kris, they love each other as friends both have admitted that, they support each other, twitter each other’s albums etc. Why are you blaming Adam and wishing bad karma on him? Kris WON American Idol. He got the contract that all the contestants were hoping for. Just so happens so did Adam and Allison. You know, just because Adam is in the headlines more does not make him worthy of blame regarding Kris. Adam does his thing, Kris does his. Adam has not set out his whole career with the aim of undermining Kris. Though coming to think of it, there is some uncertainty in AO ranks at the moment regarding the meaning of Adam’s bonus track “Masterplan”. Oooh, bet the masterplan was to let Kris win American Idol, then totally outdo him in publicity and album sales! Yeah that’s it. Adam is a bastard and worthy of all the shitty karma coming his way.

      • feeny4evr

Look dude, I never said I wished bad karma on Adam.. just good karma on Kris. I truly hope Adam gets control of the monster that is the media around him because frankly I want to like him, the media (which I know he can’t control) is making it hard for me. It’s the same for the likes of Lady Gaga. I think they’d both be great and fine without the stunts. And I’m well aware of the support that both Kris and Adam give each other. It warmed my heart. I think what mostly irritates me are the crazy Adam fans that feel the need to do an I-told-you-so dance on any post that even has the audacity to say anything nice about Kris. That just might be what’s really getting me. But I do wish Adam the best (no bad karma and no more fame whorish press). I even bought his album and I like a few tracks. So lay off man…

        • http://www.affinityhealthandbeauty.co.uk Lamberkitten

Thanks for explaining – I took yr comment the wrong way – sorry :)

  • magnacarta

Kris Allen’s album is the only album I’ve bought from the American Idol thing. I’ve been a fan of a few other idol contestants (Michael Johns, David Cook), but never enough to go buy their albums.

This guy is crazy talented, and his music is actually exactly what’s popular. I really hope his next numbers make up for this week’s disappointment.

I have to wonder if the numbers include sales in other countries…

  • erinnthered

Yeah, Flipside is a regional burn. I have friends who do it. The last three years I tried to work it out with them, but either money or timing kept getting in the way. I think the reason they only do the regional burn is the expense. One installation a year is enough.

That’s my next issue then. Finding a camp. Are there camps looking for people? Places to meet people who want to do a theme camp? Any idea? If I do this the old fashioned way, it could be another 4 years before I work this out. I just moved to a new state!

    • TopIdol

I decided to go about a month before. Found a camp then, too. It’s really not difficult, and I’m not planning any art installations anytime soon. That’s the beauty of it. You can do whatever you want. I plan on volunteering at Media Mecca or something this year, but even if you just help cook meals for your camp, you’re fine. And I did it somewhat cheaply, of course, I’m not building anything and I am never going to bring a ton of costumes. I had a suitcase, two bins (that probably could be reduced to one in retrospect), a tent and a sleeping bag.

      • erinnthered

Sweet! Volunteering actually sounds like a great way to participate. I guess I’ll try to plan on it, and get to looking in the Spring. Did you use the BM message boards?

  • calico

“Also, thought this might lift the spirits of Kristards a bit. My contact from SonyBMG said Kris Allen’s album has sold out in my country.”

Aww, thanks for that Verbally Dyslexic (I was going to use your intitials but, uh, no). It’s been a rough couple days for Kristards. Hell, it’s been a rough 6 months. So thanks Idol Tard for a great read. I listen to adult alternative pretty much exclusively, and Kris would fit nicely into that format. Hopefully, someday, he can shed the Idol stigma and be accepted there. Maybe the 19Evil shunning of the talented and decent Kris Allen isn’t such a bad thing in the long run.

    • TopIdol

      I’m not Idol Tard :)

      • calico

Oh shit. Sorry about that. It’s late. And sorry Idletard. Two birds with one stone.

      • Verbally Dyslexic

        OMG HAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!

        I am very amused :)

  • Sandy

I bought Kris Allen’s CD from Walmart today and I really like many of the songs on it. I’m a big fan of David Cook’s and for me none of season 8′s contestants measured up to him but I did enjoy most of Kris’s performances and he has been steadily growing on me. Walmart had Allen Lambert’s CD’s more prominently displayed than Kris’s with a sticker on it proclaiming it the most anticipated album of the year. They had it on sale for $9.99 while Kris’s was full price at $13.88. I only liked a few of Adam’s Idol performances and his AMA disaster did nothing to persuade me to give his CD a chance so I passed on it. I hate seeing Kris Allen as the winner being shortchanged as he has been and Adam seems to have had so much just handed to him without having earned it. I wonder if he will be able to live up to the hype.

    • CB Radio

That’s funny cuz in my WM, Adam’s CD also said $9.99 on it and Kris’s CD said $13.88. Now if you were just curious about Kris’s CD and weren’t actually gonna buy it, you wouldn’t have known that it will actually ring up at $9.99 at the check out. But if you only have $11 and you had a choice between one that said $9.99 and one that said $13.88, well, obviously you’ll buy the one you can “afford” thinking the other one is more expensive.

Yet another way to make it harder for Kris to succeed, huh?

      • Sandy

Did yours ring up at $9.99? My receipt says $13.88. The price difference doesn’t make a difference to me personally but money is tight for a lot of people and for someone who liked both guys but could only afford one they might just buy only Adam’s.

  • HB

Have to make a confession. I got one of those snuggies for my birthday, and I love the thing. Used to think they were so silly, but damn if they aren’t warm. I’m just jealous of the person who invented it. So simple, and they are probably rolling in $$$.

    • TopIdol

My friend, Ronny, has been randomly texting me about Snuggies for the last 10 minutes. I also had to explain the Slanket. I was going to do a Snuggie Happy Hour at Burning Man so I bought one. I figured people might bring Snuggies. But it didn’t get cold enough for one and I never took mine out of the bag (its now in my closet), nor did I go out of my way to promote it. Next year, I will be doing a Jonestown Happy Hour, where I will serve kool-aid mixed with Everclear and everyone will lie down in the dome after drinking it and listen to my creepy-uncle friend who loves leering at women speak into a megaphone and/or the original Jim Jones tapes…

      Yeah…I know I’m a little twisted.

      • erinnthered

Shut up! That sounds awesome. I wish I didn’t burst into flames after 10 minutes in the sun, or I’d totally crash. Burning Man was always off my list because of that.

        • TopIdol

          Wear a hat and SPF 30 :)

          • erinnthered

Try SPF 80…I suppose I could decorate an umbrella/ parasol…gah! This is in my part of world now, isn’t it? Maybe…

          • TopIdol

Oh yeah. Parasols are very popular.

            Sigh…I miss HOME.

          • erinnthered

I’m thinking, I’m thinking…how does this work anyway? Do you need to be part of a collective? I know it’s like that for Flipside.

          • TopIdol

Yes and no. Flipside is like a mini/quasi BM. I think its a regional burn? There are a good number of people who actually only do regional burns.

It helps to get in with a camp. There are people who go on their own, lots of them, but I think the camp or theme camp is the best way to do it.

          • erinnthered

Hee. My reply is above yours. Must’ve pushed the wrong “reply” button.

      • deez

Everclear and Koolaid? I made a really bad impression on the RA of my dorm floor after drinking 12 cups of that one time.

        • TopIdol

I will probably use Flavor-Aid, as this is historically accurate. Kool-Aid only made up a few of the packets used in the Jonestown brew, yet, its brand/market dominance was solidified after the massacre.

Hey, Everclear is better than cyanide.

          • LeighKat

EVERCLEAR is an elixir sent straight from Hell! lol! A bottle of that made it’s way to a NorthSide (area of Cayman) group getaway earlier this year and this light weight nearly died after one shot of the stuff.
Needless to say, that was one fun weekend!

          • TopIdol

So is Hell on the NorthSide? Because I know “Hell” is in Cayman :)

  • kimberly

I only really started watching American Idol Season 7. My mom passed away unexpectedly that December and my daughter and I needed to escape and to be entertained. IDOL fit the bill. It was the first year, I got caught up in the show. I loved it and I hated it. David Cook was my favorite that season. I continued to watch into Season 8 to catch a glimpse of David Cook. I immediately hated the changes they made to Season 8 and I hated the obvious favoritism that began right from the start. When Danny Gokey sang the Whitney? song, I told my daughter I wasn’t going to watch anymore. She begged me to watch it with her and I relented.

Then along came this adorable guy that pretty much bounced around the stage in the group song with so much joy, I couldn’t stop watching him. Whenever he sang, he had such unbridled joy, it was infectious. Even MJ week when he hit a few pitchy notes, I actually laughed because he was so darn boyish and cute. I still recall when Anoop got bottom 3 how devastated Kris looked and I pretty much believed Kris would have traded places with Anoop then and there because he knew his performance had not been better than Anoop’s. I knew then Kris was the real deal, a better human being than most and a geuninely good and kind soul. He pretty much owned me then.

And he still does and the best part of it is I like his music. I genuinely like it. My daughter and I ran some errands today and it’s just so much fun driving along and singing loudly to Alright With Me. That song just makes me smile. So many good songs on the CD.

My 16 year old son told me that once Kris gets away from the IDOL stigma, guys like him would buy his music. He thinks that might be the only thing holding them back. He said he likes Kris’s music, but wants it to be more acoustic. This was in response to me saying that if he didn’t know Kris was from IDOL, he would love Kris’ music. He didn’t deny it.

Being a music snob, after purchasing a Daughtry CD, my first Idol purchase ever, I would flip the CD over so know one would see who it was. I didn’t want people to know, I was listening to American Idol music. David Cook’s CD was the next purchase and again, I wasn’t shouting my love for his music from the rooftops. I found myself hiding his CD away from prying eyes as well.

Kris is a different story. I want people to hear it, I want people to know who he is and that his music is good. His video is cool and doesn’t warrant second-hand embarrassment. His music is cool and he is damn cool, as well. He’s so “chill”, very James Dean-ish and I get more of a Elvis vibe in Kris than I do in Adam. Quiet, low-key, very cool. It’s not fake at all.

There’s something about this guy. If all these people that are here professing their love for Kris can see it, others will as well. I don’t think 19R/Jive are that blind. I think Fuller and everyone Kris encounters have been won over by him. I think he’s got a good musical future ahead of him and he is still young to learn and grow. The world is his for the taking. But this guy will make sure he gives back as well. How can you not love him when he says he hasn’t spent any of his money yet.

I swear I will never become this invested again in another IDOL contestant. It’s beyond insane and seriously unhealthy. My husband questions my mental health on a regular basis, as do I. A novel partially written and left to languish, stacks of books covered in dust — time to get back to my life. I pray to all that’s holy, season 9 don’t you dare suck me in …

    • Starr

I want to roll around in your post. AMEN to all that, AMEN. Especially the part about the second-hand embarrassment! I don’t mind showing off Kris’s CD. He’s kind of hot and his album cover has that James Dean quality to it. And yes, his video is definitely devoid of the queso that you don’t feel like minimizing the screen when someone walks into the room LOL

    • http://www.affinityhealthandbeauty.co.uk Lamberkitten

Jeez Kimberley, we have a little more in common than I would have thought. Sadly, my unfinished work consists mainly of ironing rather than novels :)

    • Lakshmi

Kimberly, I just wanted to say that I always enjoy reading your comments on this site. I also started watching Idol during the worst year of my life (season 6). Though it wasn’t anything close to what you and your family were going through, I know all about reality television as escapism.

You’ve almost convinced me to by Kris’ album. :) Happy Thanksgiving!

      • TopIdol

I only saw a couple episodes of Season 6. I escaped watching it b/c I as in Europe for all of January, so there was no reason to get “hooked”. I only turned it once to see that guy named Sanjaya I kept hearing about. All of it was very underwhelming. And that little nasty beat-boxing troll gave me the heebie jeebies.

  • Lynn

hahaha just realized what I said above is gonna drove a lot of glamberts crazy since I’m sure they believe Adam should have won.

  • Lynn

Well, during AI S8 I kept thinking how unjust the show was for pimping Adam and Danny while constantly throwing Kris and Allison under the bus. But in the end, Kris won and for the first time in my life, I thought there was justice afterall. However, I knew then his won will come with a huge price but just didn’t know it’ll be this huge… Hopefully justice will prevail sooner or later again.

    • kimberly

Today, a woman in a booth across from me at a neighborhood diner was pretty upset, unaware of how loudly she was talking on her phone. I overheard part of her conversation, a serious squabble with her brother over their mother’s estate. He sounded like a real dick. When I was leaving the diner, I said to her, “I’m a true believer in karma. Happy Thanksgiving.” At first, she seemed confused, but then she said to me, “I hope so. I hope you’re right.”

Good karma brings good things. Kris has got it in the bag. ::grin::

    • Starr

Dude I feel the exact same way. I honestly never expected Kris would win, let alone make it to the top 13 through votes and not Wild Card. I loved his performance of “Man in the Mirror” but thought that America would never vote for a guy who was this low-key and who dressed like a guy you’d run into at your local Borders. Color me shocked when he got voted in. I was as surprised as Kris. Never expected him to make it all the way to the end either. I guess you could say my experience with Top 40 and what is supposedly considered “good music” by the majority of America is not very good LOL so I had very low expectations in people’s taste level. Yup, I’m kind of a snob.

I had voted for him like crazy during finale night, but after I did I started to realize that if he won, those crazy batshit Glamberts would be all over Kris and tear him to shreds. But the idealistic music lover in me kept interrupting and saying crazy fans of another person should not deter the guy who you personally think is the best artist to win the show. After all, isn’t that what American Idol is all about? Finding the best UNDISCOVERED talent out there? Lambert probably would have made it anyway even if he never cracked the top 5. He’s a Hollywood guy; he probably knows how to schmooze with the right people.
